history
In 1963 a special committee was convened in Katowice with the aim of uniting all the clubs and sports clubs in the city into one large one. In the middle of 1963 Rapid Wełnowiec and Orzeł Wełnowiec merged to form Rapid / Orzeł. In 1964 , Rapid / Orzeł, Górnik Katowice, Koszutka Katowice, Katowicki Klub Łyżwarski (Katowice Skating Club), Katowicki Klub Sportowy Górnik, Górniczy Klub Żeglarski Szkwał and other Katowice sports institutions came together to form what is now the Górniczy Klub Żeglarski SzkwałKS Katowice. Four years later, on August 9, 1968, the Dąb Katowice association, founded in 1911, joined. The first first division game completed GKS Katowice on August 8, 1965 against Górnik Zabrze. In 1986, the club reached the round of 16 in the European Cup Winners' Cup , after the Icelandic representative Fram Reykjavík was defeated 3-0 and 1-0 in the first round .
From March 27, 2003 to June 11, 2004 the club played under the name Dospel Katowice . In the 2004/05 season GKS took 14th place in the Ekstraklasa and was relegated to the II league . For legal and financial reasons, however, it was decided to start playing in the fourth league. After relegation to the fourth division, the club was taken over by the group Stowarzyszenie Sympatyków Klubu GKS Katowice , which consists of long-time fans of the club. In June 2006 the club rose by first place in League IV and after two relegation games in III. League on. In June 2007 GKS rose again. With second place in the table, the team qualified for relegation to the second division. By the forced relegation of the GKS assigned opposing team Katowice rose automatically. In the 2007/08 season GKS Katowice was able to hold the II league without problems and ended up in 10th place with 43 points from 34 games. For the 2008/09 season, the II league was renamed the 1st league , where the club finished last after the first half of the season. With a strong second half of the season, the club surprisingly managed to stay in the league and ended up in 11th place in the table. In the 2018/19 season , the club was relegated to the third division after long membership in the second division.
Due to the absence of sponsors, GKS is currently in a serious economic crisis, but was able to continue operating in the league thanks to financial aid from the city of Katowice and large savings.
