The DEB Cup for the 2012/13 season is being organized by the German Ice Hockey Federation and the Ice Hockey Game Operating Company for the fourth time since the tournament was redesigned in 2009. The clubs from last year's 2nd Bundesliga , qualified upper division teams , the regional league champions and the German U20 national ice hockey team are involved . Teams from the highest German league do not take part.
In addition to the crystal challenge cup, the winner of the competition, which is played in the knockout system , receives a prize of € 12,000. The competition began on September 16, 2012 and ended with the finals on February 27, 2013.
mode
The entire cup is played in simple knockout rounds. For the drawing of the fixtures, all teams are drawn from the same pot in each round, whereby the U20 selection always competed away. Home rights always have the lower class, in the case of equality the first club drawn.
Attendees
According to the DEB's implementation regulations, the trophy will be held with teams from the 2nd Bundesliga, Oberliga Süd, two qualified clubs from Oberligen West, Ost and Nord as well as the German U20 national team. In addition, there are substitutes according to the placements in the upper league final round / the upper league promotion play-offs in order to fill the starting field to 32 teams.
From the Oberliga East qualified next to the winner of the Cup round , the EHV Schönheide 09 "wolves" of the East champion MEC Halle 04 "Saale Bulls" , from the Oberliga West next to the Cup Winners Königsborner JEC "Bulldogs" of the EV foxes Duisburg as Rises Play-off finalist. The regulations of the Lower Saxon Ice Sports Association (NEV) promised not only the first and second place in the final table but also the winner of the cup qualification of the Oberliga Nord . This turned out to be a mistake in retrospect, so that the formally qualified Adendorfer EC "Heidschnucken" was not registered for the cup and wanted to appeal against the decision. The protest was later abandoned when the Lower Saxony Ice Sports Association took over responsibility. Hopes for a move up for the EHF Passau Black Hawks , who were withdrawing from the Oberliga Süd , were not fulfilled. The Red Devils from Bad Nauheim moved up for the Passau . The matches of the next round were drawn after checking the score sheets of all games.
Tournament schedule
The fixtures for the respective round were drawn only after the previous round had ended, so that the further pairings were not yet foreseeable.

The Bietigheim Steelers defended the DEB Cup with a 2-1 victory over Starbulls Rosenheim as the first team in the history of the competition. Since taking office in December 2011, coach Kevin Gaudet has achieved his second title win with the Bietigheim Steelers .
