The district of Dautphe belongs to the large community of Dautphetal in the central Hessian district of Marburg-Biedenkopf and is the largest district of the community with around 2300 inhabitants. The center of the municipality is also located here, along with the municipal administration. The middle centers Biedenkopf and Gladenbach are 6 km and 10 km away, the associated regional center Marburg is about 20 km. In the vernacular, the place name is Dauweroff or Dauroff.

Dautphe is located in the west of the Marburg-Biedenkopf district in the foothills of the Rhenish Slate Mountains in the valley of the eponymous river Dautphe , which flows into the Lahn in the neighboring village of Friedensdorf . Dautphe is surrounded in the north-west and north by the secondary peaks of the Schwarzenberg , which also includes the highest point in the community, the Nimerich (522 m). The Dautphetal opens to the Lahn valley to the east-southeast.

Thanks to the quiet but still convenient location in the hinterland , Dautphe is an attractive place to live: The second district town of Biedenkopf is about six km away, Gladenbach about 10 km and Dillenburg is about 30 km away. Gießen , 45 km away, can be reached in an hour, Frankfurt am Main is 110 km away.

Dautphe is located in the warm, temperate rainy climate of the middle latitudes. The mean daily mean temperature is around 15–17 ° C in summer and around −1 ° C to 1 ° C in winter. The mean amount of precipitation in the Dautphe area is around 800–1000 mm.

history

The place Dautphe was first mentioned in 791 in the Lorsch Codex on the occasion of a donation by a Rutwin and his wife district administrator to the Lorsch monastery with in Dudafhero marca (in the district of Dautphe) in pago Hessen (in the Gau Hessen). In surviving documents, Dautphe was mentioned under the following place names : 1238 Dudephe (also 1457), 1238 Cent Dudusse , 1249 Thudefe , 1356 Dudiffe , 1412 Dedeffe , 1435 Düdephe and Dydophe , 1493 Dutffe , 1507 Tutfe and Dutph , 1520 Dutphe , 1629 and 1711 Dautphe and 1705 Tautphe .

The listed Martinskirche was built around 1100 as a single-nave, Romanesque hall church and expanded in the 12th century by a separate western part, the so-called Wendelstein. The early Gothic choir tower was added in the 13th century .

The statistical-topographical-historical description of the Grand Duchy of Hesse reports on Dautphe in 1830:

"Dautphe (L. Bez. Gladenbach) evangel. Parish village; is located on a small hill not far from the Dautphe and 2 1 ⁄ 2  hours from Gladenbach. There are 56 houses, 343 inhabitants, who are Protestant except for 2 Catholics, and copper ores and iron stones in the district. - The Dautpher Mark occurs early on under the name Dudafhero-marca , which name also requires a locality Dautphe - Dudaffe , Dutphe , Duff . Little is known of the earlier history of the church, which included 13 places in the 15th century. "

The place was also the target of an air raid during World War II due to its industry . Its appearance changed significantly after the Second World War. Where up to that time agriculture provided the livelihood of most of the residents in addition to smaller industry, the nearby industries now often form the livelihood of the residents.

In March 1952, the municipality of Dautphe was granted the right to use a coat of arms by the Hessian State Ministry.

In June 1952, the Hessian Minister of the Interior approved the use of a flag in the colors blue-white-blue with a coat of arms.

Honorary citizen

The only honorary citizen in the former community of Dautphe was the emigrant Andreas Klingelhöfer on September 13, 1921. Born in Dautphe on November 26, 1863, he emigrated to Chicago with his wife Rose in 1894 and donated 2,000 marks in 1921 for charitable purposes out of solidarity with his homeland .
