The German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1984 took place under the title Ein Lied für Luxemburg .

The Bayerische Rundfunk retained the mode of previous years due to the success of Genghis Khan , Katja Ebstein , Lena Valaitis and the victory by Nicole in.
A jury of thirteen professionals from the entertainment industry selected the 24 semi-finalists from 972 submissions, from which the radio listeners chose the twelve finalists.
After the preliminary decision, which this year also took place five weeks before the Eurovision Song Contest , 519 radio listeners and television viewers were interviewed by telephone after the twelve tracks had run through the polling institute Infratest . During the broadcast, they had to rate the twelve titles using a given point scale.
