The German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 took place under the title Ein Lied für Dublin .
By sending the first time led Jenny Jürgens , daughter of Udo Jürgens which the winner of the previous Euro Vision Song Contest, Johnny Logan welcomed as a guest. The orchestra was directed by Ed Sperber .

The Bavarian broadcasting company kept the mode of the previous years due to multiple successes.
A jury of thirteen professionals from the entertainment industry selected the twenty semi-finalists from 566 submissions, from which the radio listeners chose the twelve finalists.
After the preliminary decision, which this year took place five weeks before the Eurovision Song Contest , 519 radio listeners and television viewers were interviewed by telephone after the twelve tracks had been run by the polling institute Infratest . During the broadcast, they had to rate the twelve titles using a given point scale.
In 1988, contrary to the previous year, the final scores of the individual performers were announced.
