action

A long time ago King Sigismund killed the dragon and saved the life of his friend, King Gustav. From that time on, Sigismund's daughter, Princess Elisabeth, King Gustav's son, was promised to Prince Leopold.

Since a trip would be too strenuous for the princess’s mother with heart disease, Princess Elisabeth is accompanied to the wedding by the maid Magdalena. The queen gives her daughter a cloth with three drops of her blood to protect her; these are to protect the princess from misfortune. A stain of blood disappears when Elisabeth and Magdalena are attacked and the robbers are put to flight; the second blood stain disappears when Magdalena tries to escape in vain. Magdalena, tired of having to eke out her life as a maid, throws Elisabeth's handkerchief into the lake and forces the princess to swap roles. The last drop of blood disappears in the lake and turns it red.

At the castle of Prince Leopold and his father Gustav, she looks after the geese as a goose-girl together with goose-herd Kürdchen, Prince Leopold's friend. Meanwhile, Prince Leopold gives the fake princess his late mother's harp. As a princess, Magdalena uses an excuse to bring Elisabeth's horse Fallada, which she once got from her father, to the flayer . Elisabeth tries in vain to save Fallada.

In the meantime Leopold and the goose-girl Kürdchen are surprised that the alleged maid can command the wind and talk to the dead Fallada's head. Leopold's concerns that the wrong princess might not be right for him are dispelled by his father.

When Magdalena catches Elisabeth playing the harp one night, she knocks over the harp and accuses Elisabeth of what she did. Elisabeth flees and confides in Kürdchen. With Kürdchen's help, Leopold and his father find out about the role reversal.

At the wedding, Leopold asks the fake Princess Magdalena how she would react if she was betrayed in this way and what she loved was stolen from her. Without realizing that she was meant and thus making her own judgment, she speaks out in favor of the harsh punishment of having that person dragged to death in a barrel studded with nails. Elisabeth wants to spare her such an end and instead, now as Leopold's bride, decrees that Magdalena should drift along the river in a barrel in order to start a better life where she happens to arrive.
