Life

Duwner completed a classical acting training in Berlin. Despite early appearances at the Stralsund theater , Berlin remained his artistic home, where he received engagements at various theaters. From 1955 Duwner worked increasingly on the synchronization of foreign language films and remained one of the most sought-after speakers until his death. The German dubbing index shows Duwner over 2000 dubbing jobs.

With his high, roughened and slightly squeaky voice, Gerd Duwner became the voice actor for numerous comedians. These include Danny DeVito (standard speaker in ten films since 1984, including Tin Men , On the Hunt for the Green Diamond and The War of the Roses ), Oliver Hardy (in later dubbed versions, e.g. of Die Klotzköpfe and Wir sind vom Scottischen Infanterie Regiment ) or Chico Marx (in One Night in Casablanca , The Marx Brothers in the Department Store and The Marx Brothers in War ). Duwner was also the standard spokesperson for Mickey Rooney (eight films since 1961, including Breakfast at Tiffany's and A Totally, Totally Crazy World ).

The plump, stocky Duwner was often used to dub actors who conformed roughly to this body scheme, including Ned Beatty (standard actor in 23 films since 1972), Charles Durning , M. Emmet Walsh , Peter Butterworth , Dom DeLuise , Burt Young , Kenneth McMillan , Wilford Brimley , Vincent Gardenia , Clifton James , Roy Kinnear , Donald Pleasence or Jack Weston .

His voice became particularly popular through series roles - as Ernie in Sesame Street , as Barney Rubble in the Feuerstein family , as Koch Hop Sing ( Victor Sen Yung ) in the western series Bonanza or as Deputy Sheriff Festus Haggen (originally Ken Curtis  ) country singer with a deep voice, in Germany popular Duwners synchronization with a role for the private Kieksen) made in the long-lived television series Gunsmoke . In addition, Duwner worked as an actor in film and television productions, remembered above all as a cozy and enjoyable detective in the Berlin crime series Direktion City . Also the mouse Bernard in Bernard and Bianca - The mouse police were spoken of by him.

From 1987 to 1993 he was seen as Mammon at the Berliner Jedermann Festival .

When the original Ernie and Bert dolls from the Hamburg Sesame Street production from 1969 were stolen in January 1996 , Duwner, who had lent Ernie his voice since 1973, made an open appeal to the thieves, which ultimately led to the dolls being returned. He also worked with the composer Reinhard Lakomy and the writer Monika Ehrhardt , including on the CD productions for children, Der Wasserkristall and Der Regenbogen .

Gerd Duwner died of liver cancer in a hospital in Berlin in 1996 at the age of 70 . His grave is in the Eythstrasse cemetery in the Schöneberg district of Berlin .
