history

From the foundation to the turn of the millennium

The nucleus was Mercator-Inkasso GmbH & Co. KG , founded in 1974 , a spin-off from the legal department of Otto-Versand (today: OTTO ). The mail order company held 75 percent of the shares at the time . In the following year the company changed its name and called itself Deutscher Inkasso-Dienst (DID) in order to avoid confusion with a competitor. According to Otto-Versand, the company quickly developed into one of the largest debt collection companies in Germany. The focus of business activity was the collection of outstanding receivables for the group , at the same time DID was also active for companies outside the group. At an early stage, the service provider relied on intensive correspondence, telephone calls with defaulting payers, the use of IT , its own field service , the promotion of out-of-court settlements and the acquisition of mandates from outside the group .

1981 DID founded the DID Euro Incasso Service BV , a 100 percent subsidiary based in the Dutch Tilburg - the first step of internationalization . In 1987, the total of processed claims ("processed business volume") exceeded 1 billion DM . DID entered the Swiss market in 1988 with the purchase of Debita AG . From the mid-1980s, the company began buying up non-performing loans from banks.

In Austria , DID appeared in 1990 with the establishment of DID Inkasso Dienst Gesellschaft mbH (seat: Vienna ), in which it held 50 percent of the shares. Within Germany, the DID in 1990 acquired the Frankfurt collection GmbH and 1992, the cooperatives active Argus collection GmbH (Headquarters: Frankfurt am Main ). The market entry in Great Britain took place in 1993 through the acquisition of Collection Agencies PLC ( Edinburgh ) and Logic Group PLC ( Newcastle ); the two companies merged eight years later. In 1993 the number of employees in Germany and abroad was 1,100. A year later, DID acquired the majority of Zahnärzte-Kassel AG (Switzerland), then in 1995 a leading company for publishing collections in Germany , Wallstab & Co. KG . In 1997, the company in Germany brought together its field service employees in its own company, and it traded as Deutscher Kredit-Schutz GmbH (today: EOS Field Services GmbH ). The following year, the company founded a call center , Deutscher Tele Kredit-Schutz GmbH (today: EOS Serviceline GmbH ), and took a 35 percent stake in Mercator Inkasso GmbH . This company, based in Kamp-Lintfort , was founded in Duisburg in 1933 and was completely taken over in the 2004/05 financial year. In 1998, the DID involved in the credit agency Bürgel . In 1999 DID acquired Kasolvenzia in Bad Rappenau , which was present in several Eastern European countries ( Hungary , Czech Republic , Slovakia , Poland ).

At the end of this period the group had almost 3,500 employees. In 2008, EOS Inkasso acquired Arena (Switzerland) and Rochester Credit Center (USA). At the end of February 2009, almost 4,300 people were working in EOS companies. In 2009, the Spanish debt collection service provider Acción de Cobro was bought from Banco Pastor . With the establishment of EOS Matrix doo , the company entered the Croatian market. By acquiring a majority stake in WCF Finetrading AG , EOS expanded its activities to include the pre-financing of goods purchases , a business area that was given up in 2017. Sales rose to EUR 314 million in the 2009/10 financial year.

Ukrainian corporate customers have been able to access EOS services for the first time since TOV EOS Ukraine was founded in 2010. In the same year, EOS strengthened its presence in the US by purchasing True North AR . This was followed in 2011 by the acquisition of the majority stake in Hoepers Recuperadora de Crédito SA , a debt collection provider in Brazil . The company has also been offering its services in France since April 2011, when it took over the debt collection company Credirec . With the intention of gaining a foothold in Canada , EOS also acquired the debt collection company Nor-Don Collection , a service provider for banks, utilities and telecommunications providers , in 2011 . In 2013, EOS took over the debt collection unit of the Spanish Banco Popular . In the 2012/13 financial year, around 9,000 employees generated sales of more than half a billion euros. In 2013, EOS bought SAF Receivables Management from Deutsche Telekom . This year more than 50 companies in more than 25 countries belonged to the EOS Group. In May 2015, EOS acquired the Swisscom debt collection subsidiary Alphapay . At the end of 2015, EOS and Euler Hermes Bürgel sold to CRIF. EOS strengthened its market position in France and Belgium with the purchase of Contentia in 2016 . In 2016, EOS also took on the implementation of outstanding claims from the Wittenberg district as an administrative assistant , and in the same year the company worked for the Federal Employment Agency . The city of Essen also commissioned three collection service providers in 2016, including EOS. On March 1, 2017, Klaus Engberding took up the position of Chairman of the Management Board of EOS Holding GmbH. He replaced Hans-Werner Scherer, who had led the group since 1998, initially as spokesman for the board of directors, and from 2003 as chairman of the holding. At the end of 2018, the group sold Health AG and Schweizer Zahnärztekasse AG to the Austrian banking group BAWAG PSK

Image campaign

In 2017, EOS started a campaign to improve the image of debt collection. The group of companies understood this campaign as an offer of dialogue, even with critical voices. Trade and general media reported on it.

criticism

The press occasionally criticizes the debt collection practice of companies in the EOS Group. This criticism relates to the claiming of amounts that are several decades old, to claims despite incorrectly delivered invoices or to fees that are very high or are in doubt. However, EOS is regarded by debt advisors as "a provider about which there are few complaints".

additional

Studies on payment behavior and financing channels

EOS has been conducting studies on payment behavior in various European countries for many years . In addition, EOS examines payment behavior by comparing specifically selected countries or the payment behavior of defined groups, for example companies in Germany.

In 2003, EOS sponsored the implementation of a study at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf on new ways of financing medium-sized companies . This resulted in an “EOS Finance Panel” that was operated for several years and examined and presented the use of various financial instruments.

Data theft 2017

In April 2017, around 33,000 files from EOS Schweiz AG came into the hands of the Süddeutsche Zeitung . Among other things, it is said to have dealt with sensitive and illegal personal data such as medical files , correspondence and credit card statements with the names of creditors and debtors , their registration addresses and information about the amount of outstanding claims. The newspaper said it received the data from an informant . This in turn reported that they had been captured by hackers who had used a vulnerability in the server software. EOS closed the security gap and announced a revision of the processes.
