World Bowling ( WB ; from 1952 to April 2014 Fédération Internationale des Quilleurs , FIQ ) is the world umbrella organization for skittles and bowling . It was founded in 1952 and hosts world and continental championships of all ages. The members of the FIQ are spread across all Olympic zones. WB has a potential of more than 100 million members, 10 million participants and 250,000 bowling lanes.
tasks
- Promote the development of ninepin and tenpin bowling in the world.
- Maintain international friendships through national and international competitions.
- The recognition of ninepin and tenpin bowling as an athletic competition and as an Olympic discipline.
- Support national organizations that practice ninepin and tenpin bowling.
history
founding
Finland , Germany , the Netherlands , Sweden and the USA founded the International Bowling Association (IBA) in 1926 for the purpose of organizing world championships and standardizing the rules of the game. They made the first attempt to coordinate skittles and bowling on an international level.
In December 1951, the IBA members invited representatives from all countries to come to Hamburg on January 27, 1952 to debate the situation of the skittles and bowling and the possible reactivation of the IBA.
The following countries were represented at this meeting:
- Austria
- Belgium
- Finland
- France
- BR Germany
- Yugoslavia
- Sweden
- Switzerland
- Luxembourg (by vote delegated to Belgium)
The first proposal was the creation of a European association; However, it was unanimously of the opinion that it would be of interest if the strong bowling nation USA also became a member. Finally, it was decided to found a world association with four sections, one for tenpin bowling and three for the three ninepin disciplines asphalt (later Classic), screed and scissors.
At the suggestion of the French delegate René Weiss, the new organization Fédération Internationale des Quilleurs (FIQ - International Bowling Association) was named. In addition, the first association president (Heinz Kropp, FRG ) and the first section presidents ( Tenpin: Han Berger, Sweden ; asphalt: Leopold Hatzi, Austria ; Bohle: Willi Stark, FRG ; scissors: François van Arkels, Belgium ) were elected.
Sections
The following countries belonged to the individual sections:
country | bowling | Classic | Bohle | scissors |
---|---|---|---|---|
Belgium | • | • | ||
Finland | • | |||
BR Germany | • | • | • | • |
Sweden | • | • | ||
Switzerland | • | • | ||

Denmark | • | • | ||

Although Denmark was not represented at the meeting, it had agreed to participate in the association and was therefore accepted as a member of the Bohle department.
The national associations resolved to prepare harmonized rules of the game and equipment regulations for the individual sections and to communicate these to the member associations before the next regular meeting. Messrs. Weiss and Hatzi were commissioned to draft a proposal for the FIQ statutes in accordance with the requirements of the International Olympic Committee.
World championships
In addition, dates for the first official FIQ championships have been set:
- The first European asphalt championships were planned for May / June 1952 in Zagreb ( Yugoslavia ).
- The first European scissors championships were awarded to Brussels ( Belgium ) in July 1952 .
In addition, in July 1952, parallel to the Olympic Games , the first world championships of the tenpin bowling section were to take place in Helsinki ( Finland ). However, these were postponed to 1954 due to the lack of consent from the German federation, which was of the opinion that holding three championships in the first year would mean too great a financial burden for the FIQ.
After taking note of the minutes of the founding conference, Austria proposed to include in the statutes as a principle that the association and section presidencies should not be assigned to a country but to a person to be elected. This person should also be authorized to chair their respective national association. The FIQ received its first funding from the IBA, which was finally dissolved in March 1952.
One of the first tasks of the new FIQ Presidium was the integration of further national associations. To this end, they contacted the countries in which tenpin or ninepin bowling was played:
- Argentina
- Bulgaria
- England
- Canada
- Poland
- Romania
- Czechoslovakia
- Saarland
- Spain
- Hungary
- United States
The Czechoslovakia , Hungary , the Saarland and Spain accepted the invitation in the first year. The German Democratic Republic and the Netherlands later joined the world association.
The first European asphalt championships, which were planned for 1952, could unfortunately not take place as planned due to insufficient preparation and were relocated to Zurich ( Switzerland ). In the same year, players from five countries took part in the first European scissors championships.
Congresses
The German association organized the first FIQ congress in November 1952 in Munich ; eight member associations took part in it. During the meeting the first FIQ statutes were adopted, which were to remain in force for almost 20 years. A method of setting annual dues was also adopted, which also remained unchanged for nearly 20 years until the first increase was required, and German became the official language for all meetings of Congress, which would be unthinkable today.
Fundamental structural changes were decided upon at the 2011 Congress in Hong Kong. The FIQ continues to try to include bowling in the Olympic program . Kevin Dornberger was elected as the new president in a secret ballot; he received 95% of the votes from 181 delegates. Ludwig Kocsis was elected President of the WNBA as his vice-president , which increases the influence of the WNBA in the FIQ.

Members
In 1953 another six national associations joined, and by 1954 the FIQ already had fifteen members. Five years later, in 1959, the first non-European associations were incorporated: Mexico and Venezuela . These two countries had already taken part in the Tenpin World Championships in Helsingborg as provisional members in 1958 . The statutes allowed the presidium to admit new associations as temporary members until the next ordinary congress in order to confirm (or reject) their membership there.
Since 1952 the membership of the FIQ has developed as follows:

Disciplines
The FIQ was divided into two organizations, the World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA) and the World Ninepin Bowling Association (WNBA). In 2014, FIQ and WTBA merged to form World Bowling. The WNBA and its sections have since operated as 'affiliates' of World Bowling. Ninepin Bowling focuses on Europe, Asia and South America. Tenpin Bowling is represented by sub-organizations on all continents. Both disciplines organize national and international championships and competitions.
Tenpin sub-organizations:
- Asian Bowling Federation (ABF)
- European Tenpin Bowling Federation ( ETBF )
- Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON)
- Bowling Federation of Africa (BFA)
- Oceania Zone
World Ninepin Bowling Association (WNBA)
- Classic Section (NBC)
- Section Bohle (NBB)
