FDGB Cup 1951/52
The third competition for the FDGB soccer cup , held in the 1951/52 soccer season, began in the five GDR states of Mecklenburg, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia as well as in East Berlin. There had been no cup games in the 1950/51 season because the officials were busy elsewhere because of the “ World Festival of Youth and Students ” in East Berlin.
All cup games were played according to the simple knockout system, undecided encounters went into extra time and were repeated if there was still no winner. The quarter-finalists of the soccer cup played at national level qualified for the GDR-wide competition, but had to go through two qualifying rounds. In the first main round they met the teams of the second-rate GDR league and the Oberliga , the highest league in GDR football.
In the round of 16, which was played after the league season, five country representatives were still there, the GDR league had only survived with three teams, and only eight of the 19 league teams were left. The regional division Empor Wurzen-West and Eintracht Oranienburg decimated the league field by two more teams with surprising successes over activist Brieske-Ost (5: 2) and Motor Wismar (3: 2). Wurzen continued his victory march in the quarter-finals, where the Saxon national division won the top division rotation in Dresden 1: 5.
Only the SG Volkspolizei Dresden put an end to the Wurzener soaring in the semifinals 3-1. The second semi-final pairing was Lokomotive Stendal - Einheit Pankow Berlin . The Stendal won against the relegated league team just 1-0. One day before the final, a representative of the BSG unit Schwerin informed the soccer department, the highest GDR soccer committee, that Jochen Giersch, who had moved from Schwerin to Stendal and who had played the last two cup games for Stendal, had not received any approval. Lok Stendal was disqualified on the same day and in his place unit Pankow was nominated for the final. Since the GDR sports management had already preferred Berlin teams several times in the past, the population suspected unfair influence in favor of the Berliners in this case too.

Course of the game
In the duel between the runner-up and the bottom of the table in the 1951/52 championship, the Dresden People's Police made the preliminary decision in the 5th minute. A ball relay from Möbius over Matzen, Holze and again Matzen closed this one with a header to 1-0 for Dresden. The Pankow defenders Braun and Schmidt were easily played off. This already indicated that the East Berliners were no match for their opponents. The tall and athletic Dresdeners were physically inferior to the Pankower. In the middle of the second half the players from Einheit Pankow were already at the end of their stamina. Their playful means were also inadequate. Their combination game left a lot to be desired, as did the penetration in front of the opposing goal, where the attackers received too little support from midfield.
VP Dresden, on the other hand, shone with a good floor plan and confusing change of position of the strikers. These were always effectively staged by both right-hander Fischer and defender Michael. The Pankow defense came into trouble several times, also because goalkeeper Spickenagel and stopper Landmann had coordination problems.
Man of the day was Dresden right winger Karl-Heinz Holze. After he had already prepared the 1-0, he picked up a cross from his left strike partner Matzen in the 21st minute and headed the 2-0. Holze also ensured the end result in the 83rd minute. After a one-two with Möbius, he played the Pankower defense effortlessly and executed with a flat oblique shot to make it 3-0. While in addition to Holze defender Michael and striker Möbius shone at Dresden, no player could be particularly highlighted at Pankow. There the actual service providers Zöller and Ginzel did not come into their own as usual. Pankow's goalkeeper Karl-Heinz Spickenagel, who showed blatant weaknesses especially with corner kicks, was also disappointing.
