Ferdinand Habsburg

Ferdinand Zvonimir Maria Balthus Keith Michael Otto Antal Bahnam Leonhard Habsburg-Lothringen (born June 21, 1997 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian racing driver . He is the son of Francesca and Karl Habsburg-Lothringen , the head of the family of the House of Habsburg . Ferdinand Zvonimir is the great-grandson of Emperor Karl I of Austria . In 2017 and 2018 he started in the European Formula 3 championship . In 2019 he finished the DTM season in last place.

Childhood and youth

On September 20, 1997, he was baptized in Zagreb by Cardinal Franjo Kuharić . His godparents are Georg Habsburg-Lothringen , Alois Konstantin zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg , Margarita Sakskoburggotski (wife of the deposed Tsar Simeon of Bulgaria ) and Agnes Husslein . Ferdinand also received the traditional Croatian first name Zvonimir (after King Zvonimir of Croatia ). This naming at a time of political instability in Croatia gave rise to speculation, but the Habsburg family denied all attempts at restoration.

Ferdinand Zvonimir is an Austrian citizen . His traditional titles ( Imperial Prince and Archduke of Austria, Royal Prince of Hungary, Bohemia and Croatia ) have no legal relevance and may not be used as a name form in Austria due to the Nobility Repeal Act . They are only used in genealogical literature. In Hungary , where the nobility was abolished in 1945, he competes in motorsport races as Habsburg Ferdinánd Zvonimir .

His entry into the Austrian military service and the assignment to the Army Sports Association in order to be able to carry out tests and training for his Aston Martin DTM team while he was doing his service were discussed in the media.

His older sister Eleonore has been married to the Belgian racing driver Jérôme D'Ambrosio since July 20, 2020 , who thus became his brother-in-law.

As a member of the House of Habsburg-Lothringen , he is also a member of the following orders:

Motorsport career

Habsburg in the Northern European Formula Renault 1.6 (2014)

Habsburg began his motorsport career in karting in 2012 . His mentor is Alexander Wurz . In 2012 he won the championship at the Rotax Max Juniors in Lower Austria . In 2013 he drove a race at the Hungarian kart championships and won the championship title of the Rotax Max Juniors . At the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals 2013 , which took place in New Orleans from November 13 to 16 , he qualified for the junior finals after several knockouts and finished it in tenth place. In 2014 he became Austrian national champion in the DD2 class of the Rotax Max Challenge.

In 2014 Habsburg also made his debut in formula racing . There he calls himself Ferdinand Habsburg . He competed in the northern European Formula Renault 1.6 for the Austrian racing team Lechner Racing School . He achieved four podium finishes and finished the season in fourth place. His teammate Anton de Pasquale won the championship title. At the beginning of 2015 , Habsburg competed for Victory Motor Racing in the Toyota Racing Series . With a second place as the best result, he reached eleventh place overall. Habsburg then moved to Fortec Motorsports in 2015 in the northern European Formula Renault , which was equipped with 2.0-liter engines. Habsburg left the series after the fifth of seven race weekends and was 19th in the drivers' standings. In addition, Habsburg made guest starts for Fortec in the Alpine Formula Renault and Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup as well as for Drivex in the Euroformula Open .

At the beginning of 2016 Habsburg returned to New Zealand in the Toyota Racing Series and received a cockpit at Giles Motorsport . He won the season opener in Christchurch and won his first formula racing race. With another win, he finished fourth in the championship. Afterwards Habsburg was active in three racing series in Europe. He drove for Drivex in the 2016 Euroformula Open season . He won two races and was on the podium twelve times in 16 races. In the drivers' championship he was defeated by Leonardo Pulcini with 247 to 303 points and was second overall. He also competed for Fortec Motorsports in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the Northern European Formula Renault. He achieved two podium finishes in both racing series. In the Eurocup he was tenth, in the Northern European Formula Renault eleventh overall.

In 2017 Habsburg switched to Carlin in the European Formula 3 championship . At the second round of Spa-Francorchamps he achieved his first victory on July 28th.

In 2019 Habsburg competed in the DTM , where he drove one of the four Aston Martin from the R-Motorsport team . He took up the position of Ferdinand von Habsburg there, which was a problem with broadcasting on Austrian television due to the Nobility Repeal Act , since in Austria the use of the nobility suffix “von” is forbidden. He finished the 2019 DTM season in last place in 18th place with just 3 points.
