Florence marathon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Florence Marathon (official name Firenze Marathon ) is a marathon in Florence that has been held in late autumn since 1984. In terms of attendance, it is the second largest in Italy .

route

The route, which was redesigned in 2010, starts in Piazzale Michelangelo, on a hill that rises on the left bank of the Arno opposite the old town. Via Viale Michelangiolo , you first go downhill to Piazza Ferrucci and then over the Ponte Sant'Niccolo onto the ring avenue streets that lead around the center. After five kilometers you pass the Fortezza da Basso , and from km 8 to km 15 you walk through the Parco delle Cascine. Over the Ponte della Victoria you return to the left bank of the Arno and walk south to the Porta Romana. On the Via Romana it comes at the Palazzo Pitti over to the Arno river. Shortly before the half marathon mark , you change over the Ponte Sant'Niccolo to the right bank of the Arno, which you follow for another two kilometers upstream. Then you go on a north-lying loop that leads past the Stadio Artemio Franchi , home of AC Florence . The final part of the route leads through the historic center. At km 35 you pass the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and the Baptistery of San Giovanni , shortly afterwards you reach the Piazza della Repubblica and the Palazzo Strozzi . After three more kilometers you walk over the Ponte Santa Trinita and shortly afterwards you return to the city center over the Ponte Vecchio , where you shortly afterwards cross the Piazza della Signoria with the Palazzo Vecchio . Head north at Orsanmichele to the Piazza del Duomo, where you can see the cathedral a second time. After a final loop through the eastern part of the center, which leads past the Bargello , the destination is reached at the church of Santa Croce .

Due to the route that ran until 2010 and the resulting negative difference in altitude between start and finish of 56 meters, the run did not meet the criteria of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) for the recognition of records, as a maximum of 42 meters is allowed.
