Frozen ( English for " Frozen ") is a song by the American singer Madonna . The song is the first single from their seventh studio album Ray of Light and was released on February 16, 1998.

history

Frozen was a radical change for Madonna. The dark electronic undertones, Far Eastern strings arranged by Craig Armstrong and the touch of Middle Eastern percussion as well as the new vocal range were new areas for Madonna. However, the song was a huge hit and one of Madonna's 15 biggest hits. Madonna said the lyrics are about an "emotionally frozen" person. The song is mainly composed in F minor.

Copyright dispute

The musician Salvatore Acquaviva, from Mouscron , Belgium , brought a copyright suit for plagiarism of the first four bars of the song, which should originally come from his song Ma vie fout le camp . A Belgian court found the musician right, which led to the song being banned in Belgium. Madonna's record company was ordered to make all trading partners aware of the ban within 15 days under threat of a fine of the equivalent of 125,000 euros. The single was not allowed to be sold in Belgium, nor could the song be played on the radio or the music video shown on television. At the time of the ban, the single had reached number 3 in the Flemish charts and number 2 in the Walloon charts. The ban sparked protests among Belgian radio listeners and television viewers. In February 2014 the judgment was overturned by a Belgian court; it ruled that Madonna plagiarized neither "Ma vie fout le camp" by Acquaviva, nor "Blood Night" (1982) by Yan Tregger, which according to another lawsuit should be the basis of both. This ended the ban on the performance of the song in Belgium, which had lasted for more than eight years since 2005.

The accompanying music video also shows Madonna in a new image. Dressed all in black, she can be seen in the desert, black birds fly around and she transforms into a black Doberman. The Frozen video was created by Chris Cunningham . It was shot in the Mojave Desert in the southwestern United States. For the video, Cunningham was inspired by the atmosphere and the costumes of the painter John William Waterhouse , in particular his painting Miranda - The Tempest from 1916. The painting shows the character from the Shakespearean drama The Tempest, looking at the sinking of a ship, in a dark dress like the one Madonna wears in the music video. Madonna's costumes for the music video came from Jean-Paul Gaultier , who already created the golden torpedo bra for her Blond Ambition Tour in 1990.

"Jean-Paul Gaultier had made a beautiful collection of gothic dresses that year and Madonna asked if I was ok with incorporating them into the video."

"Jean-Paul Gaultier had made a beautiful collection of dresses in Gothic style this year and Madonna asked if it was okay for me to use them in the video."
