The Oberliga Südwest 1990/91 was the 13th season of the third-class league.
Season course
The traditional Saarland club Borussia Neunkirchen became champions and qualified for the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga , in which the southern group failed without a win. In the German amateur championship finals, Eintracht Trier took part, but was last in the group south with three defeats. Due to Borussia Neunkirchen's missed promotion to the second division, which did not rise until a month after the end of the season on June 12, 1991 , Hassia Bingen as a third team in addition to FSG Schiffweiler and the hopeless newcomer SC Hauenstein . The decision about the possibly possible third relegation place was already dramatic beforehand. The twelfth-placed VfL Hamm only separated two points from the Hassia, the Eisbachtaler Sportfreunde and Wormatia Worms were even tied with the later relegated from Bingen. Responsible for the almost relegation of the Wormats was a series of defeats in the second half of the season, in which the Worms won no point from the last eight games. In return, the amateurs of FC Homburg (Saar) , Viktoria Herxheim (Southwest) and VfB Wissen (Rhineland) rose as the respective association league champions for the following season. The season was marked by three teams, the champions from Neunkirchen and the pursuers from Trier and Salmrohr. For a long time, all three teams fought head-to-head. Ultimately, the Saarlanders from Neunkirchen could decide the race for themselves.
