Particularly interesting was Group 4, in which Brazil prevailed first against the Soviet Union, England and the third place in the 1954 World Cup, Austria. After the 3-0 win against Austria, the South Americans could only wrest a 0-0 from the English. Against the Soviet Union (2-0 through two goals from Vava), a 17-year-old young man appeared in the starting line-up for the first time and was supposed to cause a sensation: Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé. Second in the group went to the Russians (with goalkeeping legend Lev Yashin), who had to go into the play-off game due to the equality of points with the favorite England (had to cope with the loss of the Manchester United players who had been killed in the plane crash) : Defeated 0. Austria (middle runner: Ernst Happel!) Could not do much in this group and was bottom of the table with only one draw (against England).
Quarter finals
25,000 | Ullevi ( Gothenburg ) | Brazil | Wales | Seipelt ( Austria ) | 1: 0 (0: 0) | 1-0 Pele (66th) |
It was surprisingly tight for the Brazilians. It was only thanks to a goal from Pelé (66th) that the South Americans made it to the semi-finals against the tough and defensive Welsh.
Semifinals
27,000 | Råsundastadion ( Solna ) | Brazil | France | Griffiths ( Wales ) | 5: 2 (2: 1) | 1: 0 Vavá (2nd) 1: 1 Fontaine (9th) 2: 1 Didi (39th) 3: 1 Pelé (52nd) 4: 1 Pelé (64th) 5: 1 Pelé (75th) 5: 2 piantoni (83.) |
The second semi-final encounter between the high favorites Brazil and France turned out to be the great show of the attack by the South Americans and especially for Pele, who shone with three goals. Back then, observers said they saw the best game of the tournament in the Brazilians' 5-2 win.
final
51,800 | Råsundastadion ( Solna ) | Brazil | Sweden | Guigue ( France ) | 5: 2 (2: 1) | 0: 1 Liedholm (4th) 1: 1 Vavá (9th) 2: 1 Vavá (32nd) 3: 1 Pelé (55th) 4: 1 Zagallo (68th) 4: 2 Simonsson (80th) 5: 2 Pelé (90.) |
Brazil : Gilmar - D. Santos , N. Santos , Zito - Bellini (c), Orlando - Garrincha , Didi , Vavá , Pelé , Zagallo . Coach: Vicente Feola
Sweden : Svensson - Bergmark , Axbom , Börjesson - Gustavsson , Parling - Hamrin , Gren , Simonsson , Liedholm (c), Skoglund . Coach: George Raynor
Referee: Maurice Guigue ; Albert Dusch , Juan Gardeazábal
50,000 spectators then saw the final in Stockholm. The Brazilians didn't let the early goal by Liedholm (4th) bother them. Garrincha, Vava and Pelé played their technically brilliant game in an inimitable way, came 2-1 before the break with two Vava goals, before Pelé, Zagallo and again Pelé the Swedes (Simonsson scored 2: 4 in between) with 5 : 2 gave up.
