Gelendzhik is located on the north-eastern Black Sea coast in the Russian foothills of the Caucasus , about 90 km southwest of the regional capital Krasnodar . The climate in and around Gelendzhik is almost subtropical and its properties are comparable to the climate of the south coast of the Crimean peninsula or the south-eastern metropolis of Sochi . A hot and dry summer, a moderately warm autumn and a mild, mostly snow-free winter are common. The annual average temperature of the air is 13.5 ° C. Due to its location on the Black Sea and the favorable climatic conditions, Gelendzhik has the status of a climatic health resort . 250 days of sunshine a year enable a swimming season from May to October. The water of the Black Sea has an average temperature of +15.5 ° C per year, in summer it rises to +28 ° C.

At a distance of 17 km from the city is the Parus rock , which has been declared a natural monument by the Gelendzhik authorities.

history

The first settlements in the area of today's city already existed several centuries before Christ, including a Greek trading town and a Roman fortress , the remains of which have been preserved to this day. Later there was a Circassian settlement in this area , which belonged to the Ottoman Empire until 1829, when these areas became part of the Russian Empire with the Peace of Adrianople .

In 1831 the present-day city of Gelendzhik was finally founded, at that time as one of the fortresses on Russia's new southern borders. Until the end of the 19th century the Cossacks were the main part of the population of the place. In the course of the century the place was renamed depending on its status, so it was called 1864-1870 Gelendzhikskaya (Геленджикская) and 1870-1896 Gelendzhikskoje (Гелендикское). The origin of the toponym Gelendzhik is believed to be in the Turkish language ("gelin", English "bride" and "-cik" in the sense of "-lein").

With the construction of a paved road from Novorossiysk to Sukhumi , which passed Gelendzhik, tourism began to establish itself in the place. In 1900 the first sanatorium was opened in Gelendzhik, which marked the beginning of the place as a spa town. Gelendzhik received town charter in 1915 and since then has developed into a town mainly focused on tourism and health resorts. At the beginning of the 1940s, the annual number of spa guests was around 60,000. In 1970 the Council of Ministers of the USSR declared Gelendzhik to be one of the “spa towns of importance throughout the Union”.
