traffic

Uckerath is crossed by the B8 , which soon changes into the A 560 towards Bonn. Due to the high through traffic, a bypass has been under discussion for decades.

Second church

The second church was also dedicated to St. John the Baptist.

The church mentioned in 1131 was replaced by a new building in 1160. In 1898 the three-aisled main building of this second church was demolished, the tower of the old church was preserved. The basement was provided with windows and converted into a funeral chapel. In 1955 it was prepared as a memorial chapel for the dead in World War II . On October 5th, 1968 the landmark of Uckerath collapsed. Remnants of the wall were included in a new cemetery chapel .

New Church

The new church, a three-aisled, neo-Romanesque basilica with a transept and built-in west tower, was consecrated on October 30, 1892. The building plans were submitted by the Cologne architect August Carl Lange as early as 1878 to 1882 and were only implemented after his death. The approaching front in World War II caused severe damage to the church. On March 11, 1945, several shells hit the nave, and on March 19, the upper part of the tower was destroyed. Further impacts hit the left aisle on March 23. A fire destroyed the roof structure and the organ stage. Soon the service was held in the ruins again. In 1946 the ship was given a roof and by 1952 the final repair took place. The tower was partially demolished and given a new helmet. In 1959 the church also received two new bells, in 1978 a church tower clock and a third bell from the bell foundry Mark in Brockscheid.

Pastor Krupp

The Reformation in Uckerath can be traced back to a pastor Krupp. He preached many years after the Catholic faith since 1573, but then switched (with his congregation) to the Reformed faith. Shortly afterwards he married his housekeeper. The monks from the monastery Bödingen brought about a counter-reformation and moved Pastor Krupp and thus his community back to the Catholic faith. After the death of Pastor Krupp (around 1617), the monks from Bödingen took over the church in Uckerath in order to establish the Catholic faith.

Uckerath pulpit murder

This was not only the case in Uckerath. Notes like 1623 the churches Uckerath and Blankenberg were taken back remind of a war-like situation. The Uckerathers still recount an example of this today, the so-called "Uckerath pulpit murder". Since the Bödinger monk was late for the service, a Protestant traveling preacher from Altenkirchen climbed the pulpit and began to preach the new gospel. When the monk arrived, he dragged the other speaker with his helpers from the pulpit and killed him with an ax in front of the church. After that there were hardly any Protestants in Uckerath.

post war period

Due to immigration and war refugees, their number increased again. After Uckerath had been part of the Protestant community of Eitorf for a long time , its own Protestant church was consecrated in 1954.

Jewish community

In 1828 eight Jews were counted in the mayor's office in Uckerath. Nevertheless, Uckerath became a special synagogue community in 1864 and is also responsible for looking after the Jewish citizens in Eitorf until they were able to establish their own community. In 1887 the Uckerath synagogue community was merged with the Geistingen community.
