Incorporations

Today's municipality was established on January 1st, 1971. Due to the municipal structure improvement law of September 1st, 1970, the previously independent municipalities of Gerersdorf bei Güssing, Rehgraben and Sulz in Burgenland were merged to form the municipality of Gerersdorf-Sulz.

history

Sulz Castle, engraving from around 1886

Like the whole of Burgenland, the municipality belonged to Hungary (German West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Németszentgrót-Sóskút be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The municipality has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

In Sulz there is a well-preserved fort castle from the 18th century. The architecture of the building with its six large, Tuscan columns is quite remarkable and charming. The castle was used as a bathing establishment for guests from the Hungarian area by the Countess Festetic . The surrounding park landscape, together with the building, creates a harmonious impression. During the Second World War the castle was used as a hospital for wounded Russian soldiers. It was previously owned by a Jewish family.

With the death of the owner in 1962, the building continued to deteriorate. In 1973 the castle was placed under monument protection and taken over by a conservation association. With the support of Burgenland, the association renovated the roof and secured the building fabric.

At the beginning of July 2018, a buyer was found for the Sulz castle in need of renovation. The new lord of the castle wanted to start the renovation immediately and build a small apartment, but essentially create an event room that is to be used jointly with the fort association and the community. The installation of a castle chapel is also planned

In the municipality there are also several mineral water springs , which were already known to the Romans . This was proven by finds on site (clay jugs for bottling the natural mineral water and Roman coins). In 1905 a filling hall and a warehouse in the style of the fort were built opposite the fort in Sulz. The mineral water was successfully sold in large parts of the monarchy under the “Vita Quelle” brand. After the Second World War , the spring had an eventful history due to various owners. In the 1960s it was possible to increase the output to up to six million liters. The springs have been used economically by Güssinger GmbH since 2012 and have been owned by an Austrian company again since then.
