The Gmina Sorkwity [ sɔrkˈfitɨ ] is a rural municipality in the powiat Mrągowski of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Poland . Its seat is the village of the same name ( Sorquitten in German ) with about 650 inhabitants.
geography
The municipality is located in the middle of the voivodeship. The district town of Mrągowo (Sensburg) is six kilometers to the east. Neighboring municipalities are in the powiat Kętrzyński Reszel in the north, in the powiat Mrągowski Mrągowo in the east and Piecki in the southeast, in the powiat Szczycieński Dźwierzuty in the southwest and in the powiat Olsztyński Biskupiec in the west and Kolno in the northwest.
The rural community has an area of 184.56 km², of which 50 percent is used for agriculture and 28 percent for forestry. The numerous channel lakes are part of the Masurian Lake District (Pojezierze Mazurskie).
history
The rural community was newly formed in 1973 from various gromadas . From 1946 to 1998, their area belonged to the Olsztyn Voivodeship with varying degrees. Since 1999 the municipality has belonged to the newly formed Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.
religion
The Roman Catholic Church has parishes in Rybno (Ribben) , Sorkwity and Warpuny (Warpuhnen) . In addition to the evangelical parish in Sorkwity, there are branch churches in Rybno and Warpuny.

traffic
The state road 16 leads from Olsztyn (Allenstein) via Biskupiec (Bishop's Castle ) and Sorkwity to the district town of Mrągowo (Sensburg) . The former Reichsstraße 127 has been partially developed as the S16 expressway . The provincial road 600 from Szczytno (Ortelsburg) to Mrągowo runs through the south of the municipality.
International airports exist in Gdansk and Warsaw .
The Czerwonka – Ełk railway line has been closed since May 2010.
