The Golden Board in front of the head, or the Golden Board for short, is a negative prize awarded by a German-Austrian initiative. In the opinion of the jury, the prize will be awarded to the “most amazing pseudo-scientific nonsense” of the year in the German-speaking region . The prize was first awarded in 2011 at the Skeptiker Conference in Vienna . It has also been awarded in Hamburg since 2016 . The organization in Vienna is taken over by the regional group there of the Society for the Scientific Investigation of Parasciences (GWUP), the Society for Critical Thinking (GkD). In Hamburg, the event is a collaboration between Science Slam organizers and the DESY research facility .

Procedure

Candidates can be nominated via the Internet. A jury of experts selects three top candidates from the nominations. The following are included in the assessment: degree of absurdity, resistance to criticism, commercial interest, radius of action, pseudoscience and potential danger. As part of a public award ceremony, these three candidates will each be presented by a laudator in an ironic speech. The three candidates can comment on their nomination. Then the winner will be announced, who will be presented with a golden statue with a board in front of his head and will have the opportunity to give an acceptance speech. In 2012, the expert jury consisted of Heinz Oberhummer (physicist), Werner Gruber (physicist), Johannes Grenzfurthner (artist) and laudators Mario Sixtus (journalist), El Awadalla (writer) and Niko Alm (entrepreneur).

In 2012, a lifetime achievement prize was awarded for the first time. The award goes to a person who, in the opinion of the jury, "has made a name for himself over decades with particularly impressive resistance to scientific facts".

The award ceremony was financially supported in 2012 by the Austrian Association for Consumer Information and, since 2013, by the German Consumer Association. In 2015 the Austrian branch of the Cochrane Collaboration was a cooperation partner. The event has been moderated in Vienna by the journalist Martin Thür since 2011 .

The event in Hamburg has been taking place in cooperation with DESY since 2017 .

The science format IQ - Science and Research from Bavaria 2 also reports on the award, and in 2015 ORF reported on the award ceremony on ZIBflash . Further mentions were made in the taz , the Berliner Zeitung and the Basler Zeitung .
