Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe

Hamilton Shirley Amerasinghe (born March 18, 1913 in Colombo , † December 4, 1980 ) was a politician from Sri Lanka .

After attending the University of Colombo, which was then a partner of the University of London , and graduating in 1934, he entered the administration of his home country in 1937.

After doing some work at home, he was sent to the Embassy of what was then known as Ceylon in Washington, DC in 1953 , where he stayed until 1955. In 1957 he became Ceylon’s representative at the UN General Assembly . He returned home and took over the treasury in 1961. In 1963 he went abroad again. He became envoy to Ceylon in India , Nepal and Afghanistan . In 1967 he took over the post of ambassador to the United Nations . He was also involved in the Conference of Non-Aligned States . He was also ambassador to Brazil since 1973 .

After a few years in United Nations committees, he was elected President of the 31st UN General Assembly in 1976 . He held this office until 1977.
