Asuel ( French [ azɥɛl ], in the local dialect [ ezˈɥe ]; German Hasenburg ) is a village and a former political municipality in the Porrentruy district of the canton of Jura in Switzerland .

geography

Asuel lies at 569  m above sea level. M. , 11 km east of the district capital Porrentruy (air line). The former street line village extends in a valley basin as well as in the narrow point of the Asuel brook to the south, in the Baroche , the eastern part of the Ajoie (German Elsgau ) in the Jura .

The area of ​​the 10.1 km² former municipal area includes in the northern part the headwaters of the Asuel stream, which in the west of the Chaumont ( 753  m above sea level ), in the east of the heights of Grande Roche ( 851  m above sea level ). , Le Gy ( 880  m above sea level ) and Les Ordons . On the slope of Les Ordons is 940  m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of the municipality. Asuel includes the hamlets of La Malcôte ( 661  m above sea level ) and Les Rangiers ( 856  m above sea level ) on the pass road from Les Rangiers, La Caquerelle ( 830  m above sea level ) on the ridge of the Mont-Russelin Chain and numerous individual farms. Asuel's neighboring communities were Pleujouse , Fregiécourt , Cornol , Montmelon , Saint-Ursanne , Boécourt and Bourrignon .

With 186 inhabitants (at the end of 2007) Asuel was one of the small communities in the canton of Jura. 90.7% of the residents are French-speaking, 7.9% German-speaking and 1.4% Italian-speaking (as of 2000). Since 1870 (then 462 inhabitants) the population of Asuel has halved.

economy

Asuel is still dominated by agriculture . Outside the agricultural sector, there are jobs in local small businesses. However, many employed persons (more than 50%) are commuters and work mainly in the Porrentruy region. There is a large quarry on the southern slope of the Chaumont .

Asuel is located off the main thoroughfares, but can be easily reached via a cantonal road either from the Les Rangiers Pass or from the Ajoie. The village is connected to public transport by a bus line that runs from Porrentruy to Asuel.

The village was first mentioned in 1136 as Asuel . The community belonged to the Asuel lordship, whose Hasenburg Castle had stood on an isolated rocky hill that overlooks the village by 100 meters since the 11th century. In 1374 the Hasenburg was destroyed on the orders of the Prince-Bishop of Basel, but was later rebuilt. The family of the Lords of Asuel died out around 1480. From the 16th to the 18th century, Asuel was under the management of all . From 1793 to 1815, Asuel belonged to France and was initially part of the Département du Mont-Terrible , from 1800 it was linked to the Département Haut-Rhin . By decision of the Congress of Vienna , the place came to the canton of Bern in 1815 and on January 1, 1979 to the newly founded canton of Jura. With effect from January 1, 2009, the municipality was merged with Charmoille , Fregiécourt , Miécourt and Pleujouse to form the new municipality of La Baroche .

Family Hasenburg

The barons of Hasenburg had their headquarters in Asuel. Adrian von Bubenberg is a descendant of the Hasenburg family. He was in the battle of Murten in command against the Burgundians (1476).

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Etienne was built in 1839, with which Asuel, which previously belonged to the parish of Charmoille , became ecclesiastically independent. The ruins of the Hasenburg, which was built in the 11th century by the barons of Hasenburg and abandoned in the 16th century, can still be seen today. There is a chapel at the height of La Caquerelle.
