The sheikhs of Bahrain are the largest shareholders of the AG .
Company profile
Each of the 5-star hotels has its own style and character and is difficult to compare with the other hotels. The portfolio includes city hotels, grand hotels as well as holiday resorts and residences.
The Kempinski hotels are mainly located in Europe, but also in Africa, the Near and Middle East and Asia. China in particular is a key region for opening new houses. Kempinski operates 75 five-star hotels in 30 countries (2017).
With the exception of the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Munich, which is owned by the group, as well as the leased Hotels Adlon in Berlin, Grand Hotel des Bains in St. Moritz and the leased Palais Hansen in Vienna , the focus of the Kempinski Hotels is on the pure Management of the luxury hotels, which are mostly privately owned.
The Adlon in Berlin, the Çirağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, the San Clemente Palace Kempinski in Venice and The Capitol Kempinski in Singapore have the status of “ Leading Hotel of the World ” (November 2019). The Hotel Bristol in Berlin was renovated in 2008 for approx. 10 million euros, but lost the status of Leading Hotels of the World in 2009 due to quality defects; the Kempinski Hotels Taschenbergpalais and Schloss Reinhartshausen then also withdrew.
history
M. Kempinski & Co
Berthold Kempinski (1843–1910) founded a wine shop in 1862. After the proclamation of the empire, he moved to Berlin and founded a snack bar with a wine tasting room and a wine shop at Friedrichstrasse 76 in 1872. Since Berthold and Helena Kempinski had no male descendants, they took their son-in-law Richard Unger (1866–1947) into the business. They later handed the company over to him on the condition that they keep the Kempinski name. Berthold Kempinski died in 1910.
In addition to a few large restaurants, another was opened in 1927 on Kurfürstendamm 27 (where the Hotel Bristol is now located ) . In 1928 Kempinski took over the Vaterland house on Potsdamer Platz . From 1932, Kempinski leased Marquardt Castle and operated it as a hotel. On May 1, 1937, the Kempinski wine house and all of its businesses passed into "Aryan" hands with the approval of the responsible party offices . The buyer was M. Kempinski & Co., Weinhaus- und Handels-GmbH , which will continue to run the business according to the previous tradition. This was announced by the regional economic advisor of the district of Greater Berlin to the NSDAP .
Richard Unger emigrated to the USA with his family during World War II and M. Kempinski & Co became part of Aschinger AG. A fire destroyed the restaurant on Kurfürstendamm 27. Many members of the once successful Kempinskis were persecuted by the Nazis and murdered in concentration camps. In 1951, Berthold Kempinski's grandson Friedrich Unger built a hotel on the returned property at Kurfürstendamm 27. The Hotel Kempinski was opened in 1952. In 1953, Friedrich Unger sold his shares and the Kempinski name to Hotelbetriebs-AG .
Hotel company stock corporation
The company was founded in 1897 by Leopold Koppel . It developed into the leading hotel operator in Berlin. The luxury hotels operated include the Hotel Bristol Unter den Linden , Hotel Bellevue and Centralhotel (with the Wintergarten variety ), as well as upscale cafes such as Café Kranzler and Café Bauer .
In 1926 Aschinger took over the majority in the stock corporation. In 1927 the Berlin hotel company with the hotels Kaiserhof and Baltic was taken over . In 1949 there was an expropriation by the East Berlin magistrate. Modest beginnings followed in West Berlin and West Germany. In 1953 the Hotel Kempinski on Kurfürstendamm was taken over. Kempinski acquired the Hotel Atlantic in Hamburg in 1957 . In 1970 the general meeting decided to change the name to Kempinski Hotelbetriebs-AG . Kempinski takes a 50% stake in the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Munich.
The company was renamed Kempinski AG in 1977 . The Hotel Gravenbruch in Neu-Isenburg near Frankfurt is added to the portfolio as the fourth German hotel. Lufthansa acquired shares in Kempinski in 1985 and enables the hotel company to operate hotels abroad. In 1986, Kempinski Hotels SA in Geneva was created as the supporting organization. On September 9, 1999, the Kempinski Hotel Falkenstein opened as the third hotel in the chain in the Rhine-Main area. The main shareholders decided in August 2002 to acquire the remaining 1.8% of the shares of the minority shareholders.
Until February 2017, Kempinski was majority owned by the Thai Crown Property Bureau , the royal family's asset management company. A total of 79 hotels in 31 countries belong to the portfolio of the luxury hotel group (as of March 2017). The sheikhs of Bahrain have had a majority in the company since February 2017.
