action

Dracula still runs his Hotel in Transylvania with his daughter Mavis and son-in-law Johnny. However, he is sad as he has always been single since the death of his wife Martha. To cheer him up, Mavis books a cruise for them all . Dracula immediately falls in love with the human Ericka, who is the captain of the cruise ship. However, it turns out that Ericka is the great-granddaughter of Abraham Van Helsing, Dracula's archenemy. Van Helsing hides on the ship and plans to use a mysterious device to hunt down Dracula and his friends as soon as the ship enters port in the lost city of Atlantis .

During the cruise, Dracula tries again and again to get close to Ericka, since he does not know anything about her relationship to Van Helsing. At first, she was still in league with her great-grandfather and tried several times to kill Dracula without success. Over time, however, she also falls in love with Dracula. When the ship finally arrives in Atlantis, which has since been converted into a huge casino , Dracula confesses his love to Ericka, but is turned away by her.

Ericka conceals a mysterious object on Atlantis, which is only named as an instrument of destruction and brings it to Van Helsing. He uses it to call a giant kraken , which attacks Dracula and his friends. However, at the last moment, Ericka decides for Dracula and saves his life. She asks Van Helsing to leave him and the other monsters alone, but he continues his attacks and now also has Ericka on the target.

To appease the octopus, Johnny plays pep songs on a mobile DJ booth. After he also plays the song Macarena , the Kraken calms down and leaves the monsters in peace. All the guests on the ship celebrate and start dancing and even Van Helsing can't hold back. When he crashes while dancing, Dracula catches him. Van Helsing is touched and apologizes to the monsters.

Back at the Hotel Transylvania, Dracula proposes to Ericka, which Ericka accepts.

Reviews

The film received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes he was able to convince 60% of the critics and received a Metascore of 54 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic . The consensus on Rotten Tomatoes is that the film delivers exactly what fans expect. This means 97 minutes full of fast-paced gags and colorful animation.

Christopher Diekhaus from Kino-Zeit sees the film on the same level as its predecessors, again relying on "[bizarre] characters and some nice slapstick interludes". The big point of criticism, however, is still the manageable and predictable as well as little touching plot, which "has some dynamic and fun episodes in store, but surprisingly neglects their emotional beats," said Diekhaus. The change of theater could have offered exciting and unknown worlds, but the approach was neither imaginative nor outstanding in terms of animation. It is positively emphasized that Hotel Transylvania 3 - A Monster Vacation largely dispenses with “exaggeratedly hectic action scenes”, which, however, later makes the spectacular showdown all the more superfluous. The beginning, which is full of wonderfully weird ideas and funny details, is also praised. In conclusion, Diekhaus draws that the film is about “cinematic fast food that you only waste a few thoughts on shortly after eating”.

Andreas Staben von Filmstarts joins Diekhaus and believes that the film is convincing precisely in those moments when the plot is irrelevant. However, Staben finds that the change of scenery keeps the balance between relaxed entertainment and exciting variety quite good. The numerous visual and ingenious jokes can also score points, with director Genndy Tartakovsky "even letting his lust for freaky, crazy things run a little more free here". In addition to “a sympathetic message of tolerance and some original loosening up”, however, the film also relies on less successful elements, which is why some lengths are created especially in the middle of the film.

Gross profit

Worldwide revenues are so far at 528.58 million US dollars , of which he was able to bring in 167.51 million US dollars in North America alone. In German cinemas it was able to record 2,548,766 visitors and take in 18.49 million euros , which puts it in 6th place in the 2018 annual charts.
