NGC 4390 = IC 3320 is a barred spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type SBBC in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 46 million light years from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light years across . Cataloged under catalog number VCC 849 as a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster.
The galaxies NGC 4380 , IC 3328 , IC 3361 , IC 3275 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on March 15, 1784 by the German-British astronomer William Herschel . The galaxy was rediscovered on September 6, 1900 by Arnold Schwassmann and listed in the index catalog as IC 3320 .
