The ISS Dome (spelling: ISS DOME, previously also known as "Dome in Rath") is a multifunctional hall in the northern district of Rath in Düsseldorf . The Düsseldorf architecture office RKW Architektur + Städtebau was responsible for the draft planning . The foundation stone was laid on May 19, 2005; the total construction costs were just under 70 million euros (including the parking garage ). The ISS Dome was opened on September 2nd, 2006. The name giver, based on a ten-year sponsorship contract, is the Danish building services provider Integrated Service Solutions . In June 2016 the sponsorship contract was extended to 2018. In mid-February 2019, the company announced that it would not extend the naming contract that ran until July 2021. This is justified with a reorientation of the sponsoring commitment. If a new namesake could be found at short notice, the agreement would be terminated as early as July 2019.

capacity

The hall offers 14,282 spectators for home games of the Düsseldorf ice hockey club Düsseldorfer EG and is therefore the second largest event location in the city of Düsseldorf after the Merkur Spiel- Arena and the fourth largest ice hockey stadium in Germany after the Cologne Lanxess Arena , the Berlin Mercedes-Benz Arena and the Mannheim SAP Arena . Since the upper tier is only opened when there is a corresponding crowd, the usual capacity is 8,500 seats. For concerts and other events the capacity is 12,500 spectators. By converting the lower tier seating areas on the north, east and west side in the form of telescopic stands, around 4,000 standing places are available, a rather unusual arrangement for a multifunctional hall. Here, the wishes of the fans of the traditional club Düsseldorfer EG were taken into account, whose team has not played their home games in the ice stadium on Brehmstrasse , but in the ISS Dome since the 2006/07 season .

ice Hockey

The main reason for the relocation of the ice hockey club was the fact that the ice rink, which was 71 years old at the time, no longer met the current requirements of a sporting event (little parking space due to its inner city location, hardly any opportunities to address a VIP audience segment, poor conditions for press and television broadcasts, booths in urgent need of renovation for teams and officials, sanitary facilities and seats). In addition, the necessary larger structural measures would not have been possible for structural reasons due to the location between the Zoopark and the busy Brehmstrasse main thoroughfare . As a hall of this capacity was previously lacking in Düsseldorf and the ISS Dome now bridges the gap between the Mitsubishi Electric Hall (formerly Philipshalle) in the Oberbilk district and the Merkur Spiel-Arena (previously ESPRIT arena) with a capacity of 51,500 spectators in Stockum closed, nothing stood in the way of a very quick approval and construction phase.

As a result of the construction of the ISS Dome, the industrial wasteland of the former Mannesmann site and the large open space between the Rath and Unterrath districts have been closed by further new buildings and a new center, the Theodorpark, is being built. A number of office and commercial halls have already been built for logistics companies at the nearby airport , a new large branch for the car manufacturer BMW and a hotel next to the dome.

The new arena building is not equipped with a walk-around area around the hall like similar new halls, for example the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg or the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, but has two separate areas, each with their own entrances, so that the VIP - Area is separated from the rest of the hall. The concrete-gray, unadorned circulation area in the spectator tiers as well as the limited gastronomic offer of the caterer and the introduction of a card payment system initially caused disgruntlement among many DEG fans and visitors. Other starting difficulties were the poor quality of the ice at ice hockey games, obstructions to the view of some seats and the poor connection to local public transport. However, some improvements were made during the first few seasons of the DEG Metro Stars. On the other hand, the fan bar, a bistro integrated into the hall , which has developed into a popular meeting place before the game and during the third breaks, was immediately well received .

Handball

From 2018 to 2020, the DHB Supercup (Pixum Super Cup) will be played between the champions of the handball Bundesliga and the DHB Cup winners in the ISS Dome. The premiere event took place on August 22, 2018.

In the handball Bundesliga season 2018/19 , Bergische HC will play the home games against Rhein-Neckar Löwen (November 1, 2018) and THW Kiel (November 15, 2018) in the ISS Dome. From the 2019/20 season until 2022, four to six home games of the Bergisch HC are to be played here per season.

In addition to the Merkur Spiel-Arena (opening game) with the ISS Dome, the city of Düsseldorf is applying as the venue for the European Handball Championship in Germany in 2024 . The decision on the venues is to be announced in May 2020.

athletics

The indoor athletics meeting PSD Bank Meeting in the athletics hall (2,000 seats) in the arena sports park will become the ISTAF indoor Düsseldorf from 2021 . The renaming is accompanied by the move to the much larger ISS Dome (10,400 seats). The ISTAF indoor Berlin has been taking place in the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin since 2014 as an offshoot of the ISTAF Berlin .

Concerts

Many concerts are also held in the ISS Dome. Die Toten Hosen played their six Christmas concerts in the hall in 2009. But international artists and groups such as AC / DC , Iron Maiden , Rammstein , P! Nk , Elton John and David Guetta also performed there.

Connection

Street

The "Dome" has a very good connection to road traffic. The federal motorway 52 (Düsseldorf-Essen) runs in the immediate vicinity, the nearest junction, Düsseldorf-Rath, is approx. 900 m away. This junction is part of the Düsseldorf-Nord motorway junction , which is also used to connect federal motorway 44 . The A 52 is very well connected to the federal motorway 3 (exit for the A 44 at the Ratingen-Ost motorway triangle ) and the federal motorway 57 via the federal motorway 44 .

Theodorstrasse between the Unterrath and Rath districts was expanded to four lanes in the course of the construction of the ISS Dome, and a route for a planned tram connection was set up between the lanes.

Parking at the ISS Dome

A multi-storey car park with 1,500 spaces was built next to the hall and an underground car park with 400 spaces for VIP guests under the hall. Initial plans to charge 10 euros for a parking space in the multi-storey car park failed due to the protests of many fans; the fee is currently five euros. The parking situation outside the parking garage around the ISS Dome, on the other hand, is considered very bad and continues to be criticized.

Since September 2013, the parking garage at the ISS Dome, now known under the name “Parkvogel”, has been operated by SITA Airport IT GmbH. In the course of this, the traffic situation improved. In addition, the parking offer has been expanded to include parking for vacationers flying from Düsseldorf Airport.

The DOME has been connected to the Düsseldorf tram network since January 7, 2018 . For this purpose, the tram line 701 , which previously ran between the “Merowinger Straße” stop in the Bilk district and the Rather S-Bahn station, has been extended to the intersection of Theodorstraße / Am Hülserhof. The idea that at events also the trains of the U71 light rail coming from Benrath will run beyond their regular terminus at the Rather S-Bahn station in order to be able to offer a direct connection from Heinrich-Heine-Allee / Altstadt to the ISS Dome ( initially) not implemented. Instead, from two hours before to two hours after events and games in the DOME, traffic on line 701 from the “Sternstraße” stop in Pempelfort is concentrated in such a way that at least a five-minute cycle occurs. According to the Düsseldorf local transport plan, there were plans to open the ISS Dome with tram line 707 from Unterrath. However, this project was discarded due to high construction costs due to two complex bridge structures and urban planning complications.

Due to problems with the acquisition of a plot of land over which the route of the tram extension leads, the construction was unexpectedly delayed by several years. Thus, for more than eleven years, the public transport connection was only provisional by means of bus lines (line 775; since April 2014: line 557), which established a connection to the Rather S-Bahn station. Before and after events and games in the DOME, an additional shuttle bus service was set up between Rather and Unterrather S-Bahn station. Between the DOME and the Unterrather S-Bahn station (S-Bahn lines S1 and S11, tram lines 705 and 707, bus lines 729, 730 and 760), this shuttle service will be available for a limited time as line E729 even after the tram extension has gone into operation.

Construction issues

Due to the design, there are problems with the roof in snowy winters such as 2011, as larger amounts of snow could fall on the people in the entrance area. In January 2013, the snow was blown off the roof with the help of a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter from a company in Langenfeld.
