Idroscalo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Idroscalo ( German  water airport ) was the official name in Italy for civil and military water airports and sea airfields. Such facilities existed especially in the period from the First to the Second World War . In the interwar period, a large part of the commercial air traffic in Italy was carried out with flying boats and seaplanes at Idroscali . After the Second World War, almost all of these facilities were abandoned; the term Idroscalo is still in use today for these abandoned or partly converted facilities. In Milan, for example, the term stands for an artificial lake that is now used as a local recreation area .

The few sea airfields that still exist today have the official name Idrosuperficie , analogous to Aviosuperficie , the name for comparable small airfields on land. Currently, the term Idroscalo is sometimes used to represent Idrosuperficie , but only the latter is official.

A number of Italian Idroscali were in Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia , on the Italian Aegean Islands and in the Italian colonies in Africa until 1943 . The Idroscali in or near Fiume , Pola , Portorose , Zara , Rhodes (Mandracchio) and Leros as well as Tripoli (Caramanli), Benghazi , Menelaus , Tobruk and Massaua were important .
