Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok [ ˈjaːs ˈnɒckun ˈsolnok ] ( German  Jaß-Großkumanien-Sollnock ) is a county (administrative district) in central Hungary . It borders the Pest , Heves , Hajdú-Bihar , Békés , Csongrád-Csanád and Bács-Kiskun counties . It has an area of ​​5,581.63 km² and 376,334 inhabitants (2011). The county seat is Szolnok .

geography

The area is flat and forms part of the Great Hungarian Plain . The Tisza flows through the county , into which the Zagyva flows.

structure

With the government ordinance No. 218/2012 of August 13, 2012, the statistical small regions (Hungarian kistérség ) were abolished on January 1, 2013 and replaced by an approximately equal number of districts (Hungarian járás ). The small areas were retained for a while for planning and statistical purposes, but were finally abolished on February 25, 2014. Until the dissolution there were 7 small areas in the county. Only four small areas remained unchanged in their borders during the administrative reform.

History and culture

The kun in Nagykun ("Greater Cumania") goes back to the Hungarian name of the Turkic people of the Cumans , who were defeated by the Mongols around 1240 and settled here. The name Jász goes back to the Hungarian name of the Alans who settled in Hungary at the same time .
