The KAD ( А 118 ; Cyrillic КАД, short for Russian Кольцевая Автомобильная Дорога / Kolzewaja Awtomobilnaja Doroga , dt. Ring Road ) is a ring road , which the Russian city of Saint Petersburg surrounds. A special feature is that it crosses the Newa Bay of the Gulf of Finland in its western section . The route runs over the Petersburg dam .

Construction work on this dam began in 1979. At the beginning of the 1990s, a two-lane road was completed that connected the north coast of the Gulf of Finland with the city of Kronstadt on the island of Kotlin . However, due to financial difficulties, the construction work was stopped in 1992 and only started again in 1998. With the opening of the last section on August 11, 2011, the project with a total length of 142.15 km was completed after decades of construction and opened to traffic in the presence of Prime Minister Putin and the governor of Saint Petersburg, Valentina Matvijenko .
