action

Lake Suwa , inspiration for Lake Itomori in Your Name. Director Shinkai was also inspired by Lake Matsubara in his home county of Minamisaku .

The high school student Mitsuha from the small town of Itomori in the province of Hida wishes, out of frustration with her boring life in the country, that she should be reborn as a handsome boy in Tokyo in her next life . Later, Taki, a high school student from Tokyo, wakes up to discover that he is Mitsuha, who has changed into Taki's body in a strange way.

Taki and Mitsuha find that they have both switched to each other's bodies. The change occurs two to three times a week for one day at a time. They then leave each other notes on paper or digital notes on each other's cell phone to communicate with each other. After initial difficulties, the two get used to the body swap and intervene more and more in each other's life. Mitsuha helps Taki get closer to a co-worker he loves, Miki Okudera, and finally invite her on a date, while Taki helps Mitsuha become more popular in her school. Mitsuha tells Taki about an upcoming event when the comet Tiamat will come very close to the earth and that she is already looking forward to seeing it, as this day also coincides with the Matsuri (folk festival) of her home community.

On the day of the comet sighting, Taki tries to achieve a failed first date with Miki Mitsuha, which fails. He can't see the comet in the evening, but Mitsuha from her village can and sees a piece of the comet breaking apart. After that, Taki realizes that the body swaps have stopped and he decides to visit Mitsuha in her town. Without knowing the name of the city, however, he travels through rural Japan, only taking along the drawings of the landscape that Taki reproduced from memory as a guide. Finally, a restaurant worker recognizes the city as Itomori on the drawings. He explains to Taki that comet Tiamat broke up three years ago while flying past Earth, completely destroying a fragment of Itomori and killing a third of the population. Taki searches through the records and finds that Mitsuha's name is among the victims.

Taki visits the Mitsuha family shrine while trying to contact Mitsuha again. After realizing that his and Mitsuha's timelines were running out of sync the whole time, Taki drinks the “ Kuchikamizake ” (a sacred sake , called “ Göttermund -Sake” in German) that Mitsuha made and left behind as an offering. By doing this, he hopes to get back into her body before the comet hits the city. In fact, he awakens inside her body and realizes that he still has time to save the people of Itomori. Mitsuha's grandmother explains that this body swap has been going on in the family for many generations, most recently with Mitsuha's mother. Taki says this would indicate this catastrophe so that he can prevent it. After convincing Mitsuha's friends, they help him evacuate the city. Taki (as Mitsuha) fails to convince her father, the mayor, to evacuate the city with the help of the fire department. While the friends carry out their part of the plan, Taki realizes that Mitsuha might be stuck in his body at the shrine and rushes over to meet them.

Mitsuha's spirit awakens in Taki's body and she wanders onto the crater wall with the shrine in the center. Although they both sense each other's presence nearby, they cannot see each other as they are still asynchronous in time. As the sun goes down and dusk comes, Taki and Mitsuha are transported back into their own bodies and can now see each other. Taki implores Mitsuha to convince her estranged father, the mayor of Itomori, to evacuate the city. The two decide to write their names on each other's hands so as not to forget them after they return to their timelines. Mitsuha disappears before she can even write her name. Both try desperately to remember the other's name, but the memory of it and the shared experiences disappear. When Mitsuha almost gives up, she notices that Taki has written “I love you” on her hand instead of his name. Mitsuha seeks her father through her newly found strength.

Eight years later (five years from Taki's point of view) it turns out that all the residents of Itomori were successfully rescued at the time, since Mitsuha was apparently able to convince her father to evacuate in time. Taki has now graduated from university and is now trying to find a job, but he still feels that something very important has gone missing. He feels drawn to objects related to Itomori, like magazines or people that look familiar to him (and that he actually got to know in Mitsuha's body at the time). While Taki and Mitsuha are traveling on two trains, they see each other as the trains pass each other. They get off at the next stops and walk back to find each other. In the end, the two of them meet on a staircase and, out of a feeling of familiarity, ask each other their names.
