Kropywnyzkyj ( Ukrainian Кропивницький ; until 1924 Jelisawetgrad , German also Elisabethgrad , Елизаветград , 1924–1934 Zinovievsk, 1934–1939 Kirowo, 1940–2016 Kirowohrad (2018) is an industrial city in Ukraine and the capital of the Oblast with about 230,000 inhabitants.

The city is located in the Dnieper highlands on the bank of the Inhul River , a 354 km long left tributary of the Southern Bug and is completely enclosed by the Kropywnyzkyj Rajon of the same name , but not part of it itself, but is subject to the oblast administration. Kropywnyzkyj is divided into two urban rays Fortezja Raion (up to 2016 Kirov Raion ) and Podil Raion (up to 2016 Lenin Raion ) and the urban-type settlement Nowe .

history

Today's namesake of the city: Marko Kropywnyzkyj (1840–1910)

The city was founded in 1754 together with a newly built fortress of the same name on the upper reaches of the Inhul and named after Saint Elizabeth Jelisavetgrad ( Елизаветград ). To Soviet times it was called in 1924 after the first-born politician there Grigory Zinoviev Sinowjewsk , after his overthrow from 1934 after the state and party functionary Sergey Kirov Kirovo and in 1939 Kirovohrad ( Кіровоград ). Between 1941 and 1944 the city was occupied by the German Wehrmacht and was liberated on January 8, 1944 as part of the Kirovograd operation . In total, more than 50,000 people died during the occupation. They are commemorated in a separate burial ground opposite the monument of the Second World War . After the collapse of the Soviet Union , Kirovohrad became part of the now independent Ukraine and on July 14, 2016, as part of the decommunization in Ukraine , the city was named after the co-founder of the Ukrainian professional theater, Marko Kropywnyzkyj , who lived and worked here.

Infrastructure

The city has good communication routes and wide streets, which are now in a passable condition. The back roads are often in a very bad condition.

A comprehensive network is available for both petrol and LPG.

Since 2001 the number of supermarkets has increased significantly. There is now an ATB supermarket on every corner and many smaller shops and in every district there are larger supermarkets from various chains in which you can buy almost anything. In addition, the city has various markets (rinok) with small stalls where some goods can be bought even cheaper.

In Kropywnyzkyj is the state civil aviation academy of Ukraine, the training of pilots as well as other crew members and ground personnel on various types of aircraft ( An-2 , An-12 , An-24 , An-26 , An-32 , L-410 , Il- 76 , Jak-18 , Jak-40 ). The academy is home to a larger national airport. However, this has no longer been in operation as a civil airport since the mid-1990s. There should be a reopening. Currently (2010) the airport building only serves as a bus station.

The city has a train station with regular train services (see Borschtschi – Kharkiv railway line ) and various bus stations. Since perestroika, inner-city traffic has been carried out by private so-called marching route taxis . These drive between 7 a.m. and around midnight along a specific route through the city. The routes are marked with numbers. If you want to take a ride, you wait on the roadside or at a bus stop and wave to the driver. This then stops and opens the door. In 2005 the ride cost 0.80 hryvnia , in 2010 it cost 1.50 hryvnia. The fare is independent of how far you want to go. On April 1, 2010, one hryvnia was equivalent to around 10.5 euro cents. If you want to get out, you also have to inform the driver.

Outside of these public transport times, there are numerous taxis. The average fare in 2001 was 8 hryvnia, in 2009 it was 20 hryvnia.

There are also some bus lines and the so-called trolley buses , which are supplied with an electric overhead line. These trolleybuses have been renewed since 2008, so they are now in an acceptable condition. A trip costs around 1 hryvnia.

Buses, which run regularly between the larger centers of the country, are mainly suitable for long-distance transport. The train also runs, but it is very slow.

The tram , which opened in 1897, was discontinued in the course of the fighting in 1941 and was not rebuilt after the war.

gastronomy

There are many restaurants and cafes in the city center, but also outside. There are also discos, clubs with live music and a bowling alley. Much of it is concentrated near the university. There are also some newer hotels and motels on the outskirts of Kropyvnytskyi.
