Comment on the world and European records:
The final over 4 × 100 meters at the Olympic Games in 1964 was won by the relay from Poland with final runner Ewa Kłobukowska in 43.6 seconds. This time was initially recognized as a world and European record. In 1969, however , the IAAF canceled all world records in which Ewa Kłobukowska was involved because she was classified as a hermaphrodite after a sex test in 1967 . The athlete, however, was allowed to keep her title. The silver medalists from the USA held the world record. The third placed British women were the European record holders.

Record improvement

The relay of the European champions from Poland ( Elżbieta Bednarek , Danuta Straszyńska , Irena Kirszenstein , Ewa Kłobukowska ) improved the existing championship record at these European championships in the final on September 4th by a tenth of a second to 44.4 s.
