The men's pole vault at the 1999 World Athletics Championships was held on August 24th and 26th, 1999 in the Olympic Stadium in the Spanish city of Seville .
The Ukrainian world record holder Serhij Bubka had won all six previous pole vault competitions at world championships . He was absent this year because of an Achilles tendon injury , so there had to be a new world champion. The title was won one of the biggest rivals Bubkas, the Russian Olympic champion of 1992 Maxim Tarasov , who at the world championships two silver medals ( 1995 / 1997 ) and two bronze ( 1991 / 1993 had won). In addition, Maxim Tarasov was the reigning European champion . Dmitri Markov , who started for Belarus until April 1990 and now for Australia , came in second . Bronze went to Alexander Awerbuch from Israel , who had only had Israeli citizenship since August 1, 1999. Before that he was mainly active as a decathlete and started for Russia.
