Elia Simoni was born in Fagnano in 1919. He was called up for military service in 1938 and served as a pilot in the Regia Aeronautica from 1939 . After the Armistice of Cassibile in September 1943, he refused to take the oath on Mussolini and the Republic of Salò . He was captured by the German army in 1944 and deported to a concentration camp in eastern Germany. He was one of approximately 800,000 IMI (Italian Military Internees) who refused to fight for the Axis powers after the Cassibile Armistice. He remained locked in camps until the end of the war and had to do forced labor. He was liberated by the Allies in 1945. When he returned home, he spoke of hunger and cold, forced labor and imprisonment. He worked as a butcher, raised a family and attended many schools as a contemporary witness to tell his story. He died in 2015.
In 2017, the Lucca Prefecture awarded family members a Medal of Honor in memory of Elia Simoni. |
