The municipality of Elsteraue is located east or northeast of the city of Zeitz in the triangle between Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. As the name suggests, the community is largely located in the floodplain of the White Elster. The Schnauder flows through the southern village of Spora, which is separated from the rest of the local area by the territory belonging to the city of Zeitz . The municipality is located in the central German lignite district . While the north with the active Profen open-cast mine is located in the Zeitz-Weißenfels lignite district , the southern area of the village of Spora is part of the Meuselwitz-Altenburg lignite district .

history

Open pit mine near Spora

The community emerged on July 1, 2003 from the voluntary amalgamation of the previously independent communities Bornitz , Draschwitz , Göbitz , Könderitz , Langendorf , Profen , Rehmsdorf , Reuden , Spora (with the district Oelsen ) and Tröglitz . The joint administrative headquarters are in Alt-Tröglitz in the administrative building of the Zeitz chemical and industrial park. This arose from the old industrial site " Hydrogenation plant Zeitz".

During the Second World War , a satellite camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp was set up towards the end of 1944 in what is now the Gleina district and later in Rehmsdorf . The prisoners were used in the reconstruction of the destroyed hydrogenation plant of BRABAG (lignite-gasoline AG). 33 victims of this forced labor were buried in the Gleina local cemetery.

The community of Elsteraue is characterized by medium-sized companies. Furthermore, agriculture through the "Agricola Rehmsdorf Agricultural Cooperative" plays an important role, as does the lignite mining of the Mitteldeutsche Braunkohlengesellschaft mbH in the "Schwerzau" mining area of the Profen open-cast mine , which will dredge large parts of the Bornitzer, Draschwitzer, Reudener and Predeler field areas.
