history

Founding years (1906–1927)

On the eve of Passover in 1906, a group of boys between the ages of 14 and 16 met at Meir Dizengoff's house . They decided to found the first Jewish football club in what was then Ottoman Palestine. The Maccabi HaRishon LeZion was born. The first game was won 3-0 against a team made up of French seafarers. After the city of Tel Aviv was founded in 1909, the association was renamed Maccabi Tel Aviv.

In the United States, the team defeated a New York All Star team in the 50,000-strong Yankee Stadium . More games followed. The coach at the time was the Austrian Egon Pollak .

After arriving back in Israel from the USA, a players strike broke out within the team. The association could no longer pay the salaries. After a year, the football association accepted the players' demands. In 1937 Maccabi won its first championship. Two years later the second title could be obtained. At the end of this season, the team went to Australia. Under the name Maccabi Palestine Team, they completed a total of 18 games there.
