Merlscheid is a municipality in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the community of Arzfeld .

Geographical location

The place is in the western Eifel at the confluence of the Merlbach in the Prüm . The place is on a hillside at an altitude of 360 to 390  m above sea level. NHN . The closest larger city is Bitburg , located around 20 kilometers southeast .

history

On the opposite side of the Prüm, settlement remains from Roman times have been found. The place was first mentioned in 1459 as "Merhelscheit".

Until the end of the 18th century Merlscheid belonged to the Pronsfeld condominium , which was under the joint sovereignty of the Electorate of Trier and the Duchy of Luxembourg .

Municipal council

The municipal council in Merlscheid consists of six council members, who were elected by a majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the honorary local mayor as chairman.

Attractions

A farm from 1857 includes a bakery and a forge, which were probably built in the 17th century. The interior of the field blacksmith's shop dates from the First World War and has been completely preserved.

In the municipality there are three crosses from the years 1774, 1777 and 1808.

A natural monument worth seeing is an approximately 350-year-old almost completely hollow oak that still has leaves.

economy

In the past the community lived mainly from agriculture. Of the previous eight full-time farmers, however, only two are left. The current problems are forcing farmers to specialize or switch to part-time jobs.
