Shigeru Miyamoto
Shigeru Miyamoto ( Japanese 宮本 茂 , Miyamoto Shigeru , born November 16, 1952 in Sonobe (today: Nantan ), Kyoto Prefecture , Japan ) is a developer at the Japanese video game company Nintendo . He created well-known series such as Super Mario , Pikmin , The Legend of Zelda , F-Zero , Donkey Kong and Star Fox and was General Manager of Nintendo's main development department, Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development , until its dissolution . In this position he oversaw most of the internal game development. After Satoru Iwata's death, he was temporarily managing director of Nintendo together with Gen'yō Takeda from July 11, 2015 to September 16, 2015 . On September 16, 2015, he assumed the office of Creative Fellow.
Miyamoto lives with his family in his hometown of Nantan .
Life
After studying at the Kanazawa School of Crafts , Miyamoto joined the Nintendo company in 1977. His first task was the case design for two TV games: Racing 112 (launch 1978 カラーテレビゲームレーシング112 ), a car driving simulation and block Kuzushi (1979 カラーテレビゲームブロック崩し), a collection of breakout variants.
Miyamoto designed screen figures for arcade machines for Gunpei Yokoi's Nintendo R & D1 department. First for Space Fever (1979), a Space Invaders clone and then for Sheriff (1979) and Space Firebird (1980). For Sheriff and another machine, Radar Scope (1980), Miyamoto designed the artwork for the housing.
After these first compulsory tasks, he began to implement a Popeye machine , which, however, only appeared later due to license problems. Before that, the slot machine game Donkey Kong was completed, with which Miyamoto made the breakthrough. His character Mario (then called Jumpman ) became a classic and has appeared repeatedly in video games ever since. With Mario, he made “Nintendo from a troubled takeover candidate to temporarily the largest computer games company in the world”. Numerous other well-known Nintendo characters come from him, too. B. Link from The Legend of Zelda game series .
In 1998, Miyamoto was inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame as the first member , and in March 2006 he was awarded the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contribution to game programming. During the Game Developers Conference 2007 he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for his life's work. The Internet platform IGN put Miyamoto in first place in the Top 100 Game Creators of All Time . The GameTrailers platform voted Miyamoto first in the Top Ten Game Creators . At the beginning of 2010 he received another lifetime achievement award at the 13th Japan Media Arts Festival. In the same year he also received the BAFTA Fellowship Award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts for his life's work.
Today he no longer develops himself, but is in charge of many large Nintendo projects. Miyamoto is known to have been involved in the development of Pikmin 3 and Splatoon for the Wii U and Luigi's Mansion 2 for the Nintendo 3DS .
Miyamoto was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize 2012 in the Communication and Human Sciences category ( comunicación y humanidades ). 2019 he was invited by the Japanese Ministry of Education to the Person of Cultural Merit appointed.
particularities
Miyamoto is known to like to incorporate elements of real life into his video game designs: For example, the "chain dog" found in many Mario games is based on a childhood memory of him, a neighbor dog. He came across the idea for the Gamecube strategy game Pikmin while observing ants in his garden. A bathroom scale inspired him to Wii Fit and attending a dog training course for his new Shetland Sheepdog gave him the idea of Nintendogs . The idea for The Legend of Zelda came to him when he climbed into a cave near his hometown as a child. He wanted to convey the thrill he experienced to other people as well.
According to his own statements, many of his games are shaped by German influences. He cites architecture as an example. The locks in the games are based on German castles.
