Regularity of participation and successes in competition

In 2017, SunStroke Project achieved Moldova's best result so far in the competition

Moldova has been participating in the competition since 2005. Bunica bate toba made a successful debut in 2005 with second place in the semifinals and sixth place in the final . In 2006, the country qualified directly for the final, but only reached 20th place here qualify for the finals with 10th place in the semifinals, but with 10th place in the final already reached his second place in the top ten. In 2008, Moldova then failed to qualify for the final. In 2009 Nelly Ciobanu was able to qualify for the final again and got an average placement with 14th place. In 2010, however, the country only landed on 22nd place again. In 2011, however, the band Zdob și Zdub, who represented the country in 2005 and took 6th place, reached an acceptable place with 12th place. In 2012 and 2013, the Moldovan entries landed in 11th place and thus just missed a place in the top ten. In 2014, Moldova then bottomed out in the competition. Cristina Scarlat came last, making Moldova the worst-scoring 13 points of all participating countries in the semi-finals that were eliminated. To date, 13 points are Moldova's lowest score in the competition. In 2015, the country missed the final for the first time for the second time in a row. With 11th place, Eduard Romanyuta just failed to qualify for the final. Moldova did not reach the final in 2016 either. Lidia Isac finally only reached the penultimate in the semi-finals. It wasn't until 2017 that things went better for Moldova.

In 2017, when SunStroke Project, who participated in 2010 together with Olia Tira and reached 22nd place, took part, the country was finally able to qualify for the final for the first time since 2013. Finally, the country reached 2nd place in the semifinals. In the final, Moldova's best result so far in the competition followed. With 3rd place in the final and 374 points, Moldova even achieved a new maximum number of points in the competition. Moldova was again very successful in 2018. Once again, the country was able to qualify for the final after the DoReDoS finished third in the semifinals. In the final, with 10th place, the country was placed in the top ten for the first time twice in a row. In 2019, however, these two successes could not be repeated. Anna Odobescu was eliminated in 12th place in the semi-finals, making Moldova miss the final for the first time since 2016.

In total, seven of the 15 entries ended up in the left half of the table. In addition, the country has been eliminated five times in the semi-finals and reached the last place once. Nonetheless, Moldova already achieved third place. This makes the country one of the average successful countries in the competition.

O Melody Pentru Europe 2020

National preliminary decisions

The Republic of Moldova has so far selected the majority of its contributions via the preliminary decision O Melodie Pentru Europe. Only in 2007 were the artist and title determined internally. Nevertheless, the 35 contributions submitted at the time were published on the Internet and reports were made on the progress of the decision-making process. O Melodie Pentru Europa has developed different modes over the years.

Preliminary decision with two semi-finals

In 2010 there were two semi-finals with 15 participants each, seven of which reached the final, so that 14 titles took part in the final. From 2013 to 2016 there were two semi-finals with twelve titles each. Eight of them qualified for the final, with 16 entries taking part in the final. The winner was determined 50% by jury voting and 50% by televoting.

Preliminary decision with a semi-final

Before the Moldovan preliminary decision in 2006, a semi-final was held with a total of 25 participants, of which the 13 best qualified for the final. Three participants finished first with the same number of points. The rules did not provide for a solution in this case, and the preliminary decision was postponed. Three weeks later there was a new preliminary decision with five participants. Only one of these had participated in the first preliminary decision, the other four had been newly selected.

Again in 2017 there was only one semi-final with 14 participants, eight of which reached the final. Nevertheless, 50% of the winner was still determined by jury voting and 50% by televoting.

Preliminary decision without preliminary rounds

In 2005 a classic preliminary decision was held in which 15 artists took part, each with one title. The winner was determined by a jury and televoting, each with a weighting of 50%. In 2011, 20 instead of 15 songs took part. As in the debut year 2005, Zdob și Zdub won .

In 2012, 2018 and 2019 there was only one program with a certain number of participants. In 2012 there were 21, 2018 16 and 2019 only ten titles. The winner was still chosen 50% by jury voting and 50% by televoting.

languages

Most of the Moldovan contributions were presented in English . Only in 2013 was the article presented completely in the national language Romanian , with O Mie being presented completely in English in the preliminary round. In 2005, Bunica bate toba was presented in English and Romanian, as was Hora din Moldova 2009. The 2006 contribution, Loca , was presented in English and Spanish . The article from 2012 only had a Romanian title, but was otherwise presented entirely in English.
