Moravany (1927-1948 Slovak "Moraviany" - to 1927 "Muroviany"; Hungarian Morva ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,048 (December 31, 2019) that the Michalovce District , part of the kraj Košický heard and the traditional Zemplín landscape .

geography

The municipality is located in the eastern Slovak lowlands in the vast Ondava Valley , just east of the point where Ondava joins the Topľa river . To the east of the place rises a small hill country called Pozdišovská pahorkatina . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 110  m nm and is 16 kilometers away from Michalovce .

In addition to the main town, on the way to Trhovište, there is also the Lučkovce settlement, which is not part of the municipality.

Neighboring municipalities are Rakovec nad Ondavou in the north, Pozdišovce in the east, Trhovište and Horovce in the south, Tušická Nová Ves in the southwest and Tušice and Parchovany in the west.

history

Moravany was first mentioned in writing as Morowa in 1252 , when it belonged to the Bogátradvány family. The name points to a foundation by the Moravians , who were settled in what was then the border area of ​​the emerging Hungarian state. The first records about a church date from the 14th century, and there was also a wooden chapel at the local cemetery in the 15th century. In 1600 there were a total of 14 inhabited houses, two country estates, a church, a rectory and a school. After the turmoil of the 17th and early 18th centuries (class uprisings, plague epidemic), the village was only able to recover in the 18th century. In 1828 there were 128 houses and 947 inhabitants who were employed in agriculture.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Semplin County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Moravany had 1044 inhabitants, 1021 of whom were Slovaks and one each Magyar, Russian and Ukrainian; one resident belonged to a different ethnic group. 19 residents gave no information in this regard. 650 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church, 220 residents the Greek Catholic Church, 54 residents the Evangelical Church AB, 36 residents the Reformed Church, seven residents the Orthodox Church and one resident of the Evangelical Methodist Church; one resident professed a different denomination. Eleven residents had no denomination and the denomination of 64 residents was not determined.
