Italy took part in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada, with a delegation of 58 athletes in eight disciplines, including 42 men and 16 women. With two gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals, Italy was the tenth most successful nation in the Games. Both gold medals were won by the ski racer Alberto Tomba , who was Olympic champion in giant slalom and slalom.
The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was cross-country skier Maurilio De Zolt .
