Oropos ( Greek Ωρωπός ( m. Sg. ); Official name: Dimos Oropion Δήμος Ωρωπίων, Arvanitic Οροπου Oropu) is a Greek community in the northwest of the Attica peninsula .

Oropos is located about 50 kilometers north of the capital Athens in the Ostattika regional district.
During the administrative reform in 2010 , the municipality was formed by uniting the previously independent municipalities and rural communities of Oropos, Afidnes, Avlona, Kalamos , Kapandriti, Malakasa, Markopoulo Oropou, Artemi, Nea Palatia, Artemi, Polydendri, Skala Oropou and Sykamino.
history
Antiquity
Oropos was the suburb of the disputed landscape of Oropia between Athens and Boiotia . The place name and the name of the neighboring river Asópos suggest a pre-Greek settlement. In antiquity, the city's port was of particular importance because it was the shortest connection to Euboea and the island was strategically important because of its abundance of cattle and grain. The Aristotle student Dikaiarchos knows about the inhabitants of the ancient city that they were particularly cunning and greedy. Until 402 BC The place only consisted of the port city - today's municipality of Skala Oropou - then part of the place was moved to the inland near the present-day village of Oropos.
In the coastal village of Dílion, there are sparse remains of a Delian Apollo sanctuary. 425 BC A battle between Athenians and Thebans took place here, which the Thebans won. At Inófyta (twelve kilometers northwest of Oropos) 456 BC Another battle between the two adversaries took place in which the Athenians celebrated a great victory. In 155 BC In the context of a conflict between Athens and Oropos, an Athenian embassy of philosophers had to travel to Rome with Carneades of Cyrene, among others, for an arbitration award.
Archaeological evidence
Overall, the ancient remains of Oropos are pretty sparse. The main shrine and the oracle site of the Amphiaraos were six kilometers southeast in a narrow forest valley. Excavations carried out since 1884 revealed a temple and a Doric hall from the 4th century BC. Free. Furthermore, a theater , a stadium , guest and administrative houses, the Acropolis and various inscriptions were uncovered. In the neighboring town of Néa Palátia there are also sparse remains of the ancient demos Oropos.
Modern times
In Oropos was during the Greek military dictatorship in 1967 , a concentration camp set up. The most famous prisoner was Mikis Theodorakis . There is a camp for refugees and migrants near Malakasa , which currently (as of April 2020) accommodates around 1800 people.

Infrastructure
The districts Afidnes , Polydendri and Sfendali each had a train station on the Piraeus – Thessaloniki railway . The train station of Polydendri is no longer operated today.
