Palm Bay is a city in Brevard County in the US state of Florida with 110,104 inhabitants (as of 2016).

geography

Palm Bay is located on the Indian River , which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway , close to the coast of the Atlantic . The cities of Melbourne , West Melbourne , Melbourne Beach , Grant-Valkaria and Malabar border the city . Orlando is about 100 km northwest of the city. Palm Bay is the largest city in the county or the metropolitan area Palm Bay – Melbourne – Titusville.

history

The original inhabitants of the area around what is now Palm Bay were Indians from the Timucuan tribe. The first European settlers came around 1850 and lived mainly from the timber industry and the cultivation of oranges. The settlement was initially named Tilman, but was renamed Palm Bay in the 1920s. Until the construction of the railroad in 1894, the city's growth was limited, but the improved transport connections from then on brought an initial boom. In the 1960s, Palm Bay received city status. The city's economy benefited from the construction of the Kennedy Space Center , which was built around 40 miles north on the Merritt Peninsula.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 103,190 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 45,220 households. The population density was 606.3 inh / km². 72.9% of the population identified themselves as whites , 17.9% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 1.8% as Asian Americans . 3.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 3.6% to several ethnic groups. 14.1% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 28.7% of all households lived in 33.9% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 70.2% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.05.

26.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 48.3% of the population were male and 51.7% were female.

The median annual income was $ 44,768, with 13.4% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 88.55% of the population, 7.46% spoke Spanish and 3.99% had another mother tongue.

On December 3, 1987, St. Joseph's Catholic Church was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Palm Bay is crossed by Interstate 95 , US Highway 1 ( SR 5 ) and Florida State Roads 507 and 514 . The Florida East Coast Railway's freight line also runs through the city. The Melbourne International Airport is around 10 km north of Palm Bay.

The crime rate in 2010 was 262 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were four murders, 19 rapes, 60 robberies, 438 assaults, 740 break-ins, 1622 thefts, 98 car thefts and ten arson attacks.
