Peter Bastard von Geldern

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Bastard von Geldern or von Egmond ( English Peter Bursterde of Guilders ; * 1513 presumably in Grave ; † between February 3 and 12, 1566 in Kampen ) was a captain in the Luebian - Oldenburg , Geldrian and English services.

Life

Peter Bastard von Geldern was an illegitimate child of Karl von Egmond (1467–1538), Duke of Geldern from the Egmond family . His mother was probably Maria van Zuijderstein (* around 1477; † 1538) from Grave or Geldern , who is said to have had the daughter Anna Bastardin van Geldern (1505–1568) with Karl von Egmond. A half-brother of Peter Bastard von Geldern was Karl Bastard von Geldern (* 1507/08, † 1568), captain and maréchal de camp in the service of Geldrian, Habsburg , French and Danzig .

Battle of Helsingborg in the Count Feud

In the spring of 1534 the "bastard of Geldern" Landgrave Philip I had offered "the generous" of Hesse his military service. In 1535 Peter Bastard von Geldern was captain of a Lübeck-Oldenburg ensign of Landsknechten in the count feud , which Christoph von Oldenburg , a cousin of the deposed King Christian II of Denmark, Norway and Sweden , against Christian III. was led by Denmark and Norway .

On January 1, 1535, "Junker Peter" and other captains of Christoph von Oldenburg signed a request from Count Johann VII von Hoya to Truid Gregersen Ulfstand (1487–1545) in the fortress Varberg in Halland (today the Swedish province of Halland County ) to be neutral to behave. After a failed siege of Halmstad by Christoph von Oldenburg and Johann VII von Hoya, the captains Marx Meyer , Michel Bleck (Mickell Blick), Peter von Geldern and Jörgen Kock called Mynter (= mint master ) withdrew with their troops to Helsingborg . In Ängelholm to Johan Turesson " with the three roses " (* 1490, † 1556), commander Christian III, a bloodbath have done under their rearguard..

Häckeberga Castle on an island in Lake Häckeberga

The Danish Reichsmarschall Tyge Krabbe (* around 1474, † 1541) resided in Helsingborg as an ally of Count Christoph von Oldenburg. However, he did not let his troops into the actual fortress, but had to camp in the open city below the castle. In the Battle of Helsingborg on January 14, 1535, the Swedes under Johan Turesson were victorious. Krabbe switched sides and turned his guns against his previous allies. 60–80 mercenaries fell and around 900 were captured, including "Marcus Meyer, ... Michel Block, and Juncker Peter van gelleren". Johann VII von Hoya had left in time and fled across the Sound to Denmark. Jörgen Kock called Mynter and Sebastian von Jessen (* around 1507/08; † 1535) - a natural son of Friedrich III. “The wise man” of Saxony - were able to escape to Landskrona by boat after the battle . Peter Bastard von Geldern was able to escape from the custody of the Imperial Councilor Holger Gregersen Ulfstand († 1542) at Häckeberga Castle in Skåne by abseiling on a torn sheet through a window.

Funds

In 1537/38 "Peter Bastard van Gelre" is mentioned as the governor of Tiel in the Betuwe . His father, Duke Karl von Egmond, died in 1538. His executors were Count Joost von Bronckhorst-Borculo , Count Christoph von Moers and Saar Werden and Councilor Zeger van Arnhem (1502–1557). They transferred in 1539 Peter Bastard von Geldern and his half-brother Adolf Bastard von Geldern († after 1549) in equal parts the tithe of the provost of Oud-Munster in Utrecht in Groot-Driel (today Maasdriel ). Adolf sold his share in 1544.

In English service

"Petter van Gelder" (Peter Bastard of Geldres) was in the service of Henry VIII of England in 1545/46 . Before the spring of 1545 he had already been to England twice and had committed himself to Henry VIII to recruit 2,000 men in Germany for service against France. In March 1545, Henry VIII sent a letter to request another 1,000 soldiers and 1,000 seamen.

The full number of 3,000 men was reached when soldiers who had been collected in Oldenburg and Mecklenburg for Albrecht VII of Mecklenburg ( Maykelborow ), who had planned an attack on King Gustav I Wasa of Sweden , were no longer needed and in June were handed over to Peter Bastard von Geldern.

2000 men of the Bastard von Geldern were to be transported by ship to Calais by the English drafting commissioner John Dymock (* around 1493; † 1585) via Bremen, Hamburg and Lübeck . After the initial resistance of the Dukes of Holstein and Duke Ernst I of Braunschweig-Lüneburg to their passage had been eliminated - allegedly through the mediation of Denmark - the troops lay before Bremen in July 1545 and suffered from a lack of food and pay. Dymock couldn't ship the soldiers because he couldn't meet the ship's captains' financial demands. 4 or 5 flags of the Bastard von Geldern were scattered on July 14 or 15, 1545 by horsemen of Archbishop Christoph von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel von Bremen. They then marauded in the counties of Bentheim ( Beyntons ) and Tecklenburg.

“Petter van Gelder” did not come to Bremen as he had promised Dymock in Antwerp in June. He was arrested in Lingen ( Lynge ) by Count Konrad von Tecklenburg-Schwerin ( Tayckelborowe ) and only released after promising to pay the Count up to a certain day compensation of 2000 Angelots for the damage caused by the army . The Count of Tecklenburg waived the enforcement of his demand when he learned that Peter Bastard von Geldern was acting on behalf of the English king. At the end of July, Peter Bastard von Geldern was in Bremen and offered to recruit new men. He saw hostility from John Dymock, recruited soldiers, draftsman Claus Tapphorn (Nicholas Taphoren) († after 1558) or the imperial diplomat Cornelius Scepperus (1501–1555) exposed. In a letter to Henry VIII, Peter Bastard von Geldern protested against all allegations.

Carrack with Landsknechten, Hans Holbein the Younger , around 1533

In the summer of 1545, Emperor Charles V had forbidden to recruit soldiers for foreign monarchs in Germany. The edict was publicly proclaimed by Archbishop Albrecht von Brandenburg , Archbishop of Mainz, and also communicated to Peter Bastard von Geldern and other captains. The Hamburg Senate was then no longer ready to ship soldiers via its port and recommended moving to Emden. The President of the Habsburg Privy Council Loys (Lodewijk) de Schore († 1548) threatened Peter Bastard von Geldern that one would be hanged for illegal recruitment. In July 1545 the Landsknechtführer Asmus von der Hauben (Vander Hoeve) († after 1552) spread the rumor that Peter von Geldern had been killed. Asmus von der Hauben had served with Peter's half-brother Karl Bastard von Geldern in the imperial troops in Hainaut in autumn 1543 .

In August 1545, the captains Friedrich von Reiffenberg (1515–1595), Goddert (Godefroi) von Bocholtz (Buckhold) (1520–1577) zu Pesch (Pechss), Eitel Wolff von Gudenberg  d. Ä. († after 1549) and "Peter von Gueldres" troops for Henry VIII at Koblenz ( Confluence ) and Sayn - Reiffenberg owned a castle house there - to bring them to the English bases Boulogne-sur-Mer ( Boloyn ) or within 14 days Bring Calais. Landgrave Philip I of Hesse reported to Henry VIII that Duke Heinrich II of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , supported with French money, was trying to sabotage the von Reiffenberg company and "Petrus a Geldern" in order to keep the business going to his nephew Franz I of Saxony -Lauenburg to be closed . Dymock was evidently in agreement with the Lauenburgers.

In the spring of 1546, Peter van Geldern fell out with Duke Philipp “the arrogant” of Pfalz-Neuburg , who had received a patent as a colonel from Henry VIII. After a reconciliation, Duke Philip wanted to accept him in Antwerp in April 1546 as captain of a division of foot soldiers in the service of the English king. "Peter Bursterde of Guilders" was on the English pay list in July 1546. Peter's half-brother Karl Bastard von Geldern served on the opposite side of King Francis I of France around the same time .

After the peace agreement ( Treaty of Ardres ) between England and France on June 7, 1546 Friedrich resigned from Reiffenberg with his troops in the service of Landgrave Philipp I of Hesse, after its defeat in the War of Schmalkalden in the services of the French King Henry II. Possibly Like other of his officers, Captain Peter Bastard van Geldern joined Colonel Reiffenberg.

Last years

In the years 1543 to 1557, Peter and Adolf Bastarde von Geldern were forced to bring various lawsuits for possession of the tithe in Groot-Driel because of their debts. Peter Bastard von Geldern authorized Jan Steenhouwer in Arnhem in 1543 and his eldest brother Karl in 1544 to represent him legally. Since 1557 Peter Bastard von Geldern received a Geldrische pension of 300 pounds suspended by Emperor Charles V. In 1557 he initiated a lawsuit against the mayor of Driel. He lived in Kampen in 1561, where he owned a house on Burgwal , which he sold to his neighbor Jasper van Breda (Bredael) in 1565. At the beginning of February 1566, "Joncker Peter van Gelre" was sick in Kampen in the Wilhelm Germers house, was no longer accessible and died a few days later. On February 13th he was buried in the Kampener Bovenkerk in the grave of Goesen van Voerst.

family

Peter Bastard von Geldern had with Lye zu Ray (Raey; Rade; Venrode = Venray ) a son Karl "the child" ( Kairl Kyndt ), who was baptized in 1531. The rent master in the upper district of Roermond Jacob van Dombach took over the sponsorship on behalf of Duke Karl von Egmont. Peter's daughter Catharina van Geldern (* 1535 or 1538; † after 1569) married Johann (Jan) van Lynden († after 1569), the Lord of Boelenham, son of Jasper van Lynden zu Hemmen and Blitterswijck and Anna van Bronckhorst.
