particularities

The drama of the title fight was hard to beat, because on the final day of the match, leaders Chivas Guadalajara met their immediate and only one point behind rival Club Deportivo Oro in the shared Estadio Jalisco . Chivas had recently won the championship four times in a row, setting a record that still stands today. Oro had never won the title before and had the reputation of being runner-up at best, which had already happened four times: in 1947/48 and 1955/56 behind Club León , in 1953/54 behind Club Marte and most recently in 1960 / 61 behind city rival Chivas; a constellation that would arise again in the 1964/65 season .

But in the 1962/63 season, Oro retained the upper hand with a 1-0 win on the last match day and celebrated his first and only championship title in the club's history. The championship team was trained this season by the Hungarian Árpád Fekete , who had previously won the championship with Chivas in the seasons 1958/59 and 1959/60. A special feature of this season was that Chivas Guadalajara lost neither a home game nor a real away game, but instead conceded its three defeats in the away derbies, while Oro won his away games at Atlas and Nacional , so that the results of the city derbies were virtually decisive for the title award.

For the first time in the Primera División in 1962/63 the newcomer UNAM , which is now one of the “Big Four” of the country in terms of popularity. On the first day of the match there was a derby against neighbor America , which soon became known as Clásico Capitalino and is one of the most popular football derbies in Mexico . In the first derby, America had the upper hand 2-0, the second leg ended 1-1.

At the end of the season, CD Tampico , champions from 1953, rose to the second division for the second time after 1958 , while CD Zacatepec, who had been relegated from the previous year, was immediately promoted again.
