history

Raleigh was founded in 1792 with the purpose of becoming the new capital of North Carolina and the new seat of Wake County . As the capital, it replaced New Bern , located on the coast , where the colonial administration had been located since 1710. The name was given in honor of Sir Walter Raleigh , the discoverer of the North Carolina coast.

In 1808 Andrew Johnson was born at Casso's Inn in Raleigh. During the American Civil War , General William Tecumseh captured Sherman Raleigh shortly before the end of the war on April 13, 1865. The fleeing Confederate soldiers were then captured by Union troops at Morrisville and defeated at the Battle of Morrisville.

The National Park Service identifies three National Historic Landmarks for Raleigh : the North Carolina State Capitol , Christ Episcopal Church, and Josephus Daniels House . 134 buildings and sites in the city are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of November 9, 2018).
