history

Development up to the 19th century

Schömberg was first mentioned in 1177 in a deed of donation from the Hirsau monastery under the name Schamberg . It was not until 1603 that Margrave Georg Friedrich von Baden sold the Liebenzell office, which also included Schömberg, to Duke Friedrich von Württemberg . Since then, Schömberg has been part of Württemberg. For a long time, Schömberg, like many other Black Forest locations, was an insignificant Waldhufendorf . Agriculture and forestry shaped daily life.

After the establishment of the Kingdom of Württemberg , Schömberg moved from the dissolved Oberamt Liebenzell to Oberamt Neuenbürg in 1809 as part of the new administrative structure .

Development into a health resort

Only after the Erfurt factory owner's son Hugo Römpler discovered Schömberg's good climate by chance in 1884 and was healed of his lung ailments himself, Schömberg's rapid rise to a well-known health resort began far beyond the region. Hugo Römpler acquired the Gasthaus zum Hirsch in 1888 and set up the first climatic spa in Schömberg with 15 rooms. With the appointment of the doctor Johannes Baudach, the professionalization of the spa began. The first lung sanatorium was created in Württemberg. The sanatorium had extensive additions by 1902 and was given the name S1. At the same time, under Römpler's first chief physician, Baudach, the New Sanatorium was built on the outskirts of the village in the direction of Bad Liebenzell. This was then used by Georg Schröder from 1899 to 1942 as the Waldsanatorium Dr. Schröder led.

Private individuals also set up rooms for rent, so that in the heyday after the Second World War there were up to 2,500 guest beds in Schömberg.

Affiliation and spatial development of the community in the 20th century

As a result of the district reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg , Schömberg came to the Calw district in 1938. In 1945 Schömberg became part of the French zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern , which was incorporated into the present state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.

On January 1, 1971, the community of Schwarzenberg was incorporated into Schömberg. On July 1, 1974, the place Tannmühle was umgemeindet from Schömberg to Wildbad . The current community was formed on January 1, 1975 by the union of the communities Schömberg, Bieselsberg, Langenbrand and Oberlengenhardt.

Buildings

Evangelical Church Schömberg

Evangelical Church Schömberg, view of the chancel

The foundation stone for the Schömberg Church was laid on May 22, 1832. The old church, which stood a little below, had become too small and dilapidated. The parish had to purchase the property for 800 guilders , the construction costs of around 16,000 guilders were borne by the Kingdom of Württemberg . The inauguration was on September 15, 1833. Originally the church interior was south-facing and offered space for around 1000 people. The altar and the pulpit were in the middle of the south transverse side. The sacristy is still there today. The first major changes took place in 1928. The east gallery was demolished and the interior was aligned in this direction. The seating was renewed and the west gallery was extended. Two parish halls were built underneath, separated from the church by a wooden sliding wall. The chancel was now adorned with a painting depicting Jesus as savior and savior for people seeking help. Across the entire width it was written in capital letters: Come to me, all of you who are laborious and laden . In 1959 the interior of the church was redesigned again. A new mural was created by Rudolf Yelin the Younger , which depicts the heavenly Jerusalem. The crucifix from the old church, which was probably built in the 15th century, found a central place in the chancel. In 2002 the stone font was replaced by a movable, wooden one. The wooden sliding walls under the west gallery were removed and rigid glass walls installed.

Catholic Church of St. Joseph

Catholic Church of St. Joseph

In 1927 Schömberg gave the Roman Catholic parish a building site free of charge. This enabled the groundbreaking ceremony for the church to take place on July 5, 1929. The architect Hans Herkommer from Stuttgart was commissioned with the construction. The construction costs were 110,000 Reichsmarks . On May 29, 1930, the church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Franz Joseph Fischer .

The first extensive interior renovation was completed in 1980. In 1999 the interior was redesigned again. The original color on the ceiling was exposed or renewed. In the following two years, renovation work was also due outside. However, no changes were made to the external shape.

Ulrich's Church in Langenbrand

The Ulrichskirche in Langenbrand is probably the oldest cultural monument in Schömberg . The lower, solidly walled part of the tower up to a height of 12 m has Romanesque characteristics and therefore dates from around the 11th or 12th century and was probably a chapel at the beginning. The upper part with the belfry received its present form in the 18th century. The interior dimensions of the tower, which is now used as a choir room, are 5.33 × 5.23 m. In 1404 Langenbrand became an independent parish with branches. For this purpose, a 6 m long nave was added to the existing chapel, the west wall of the chapel (tower) was broken open and a Gothic choir arch was installed. The east and west sides of the chapel received Gothic windows and the Gothic cross vault. The cross vault rests on four free-standing Romanesque columns. The ceilings and sides are adorned with beautiful frescoes, which were exposed again in 1962-64. In the years 1792-1793 the nave was given its current shape with a size of 19.3 × 10.1 m. Between 1962 and 1964, the interior was completely redesigned.

town hall

In 1925 the foundation stone for the town hall was laid on Lindenstrasse. It was supposed to replace the old town hall in Talstrasse. The town hall housed both the mayor's office, the police station and the notary's office. This led to an increasing lack of space. Therefore, separate rooms were created outside for the notary's office in 1967. The official apartment was last given up in 1971 by Mayor Brenner. The administrative reform in 1975 and the creation of the community of Schömberg required even more space. An extension was not completed until 1991. In the course of this, the Lindenplatz was also redesigned. The winner of the tender was the architecture firm Wick und Partner from Stuttgart.

House Bühler

The Bühler house houses a museum for the history of Schömberg as a climatic health resort and also offers space for changing exhibitions on a wide variety of art topics.

Kurhaus

After the need for a spa house (possibility for performances for entertainment for the spa guests) had been discussed in the municipal council for decades, Eiermann was commissioned to create a design in 1954.

In 1955, the final contract was awarded to the architects Kappler and Krüger for cost reasons (Krüger also built the Bad Liebenzell spa house). Inauguration on May 18, 1957. Cost: 1.36 million DM

In the foyer of the Kurhaus there are wall and ceiling paintings by the artist Hermann Finsterlin (1887–1973) from 1957. The paintings were pasted over with heavy velor wallpaper in 1979/1980 and only uncovered and restored in 1999.

The Kurhaus and the terrace belonging to it underwent several redesigns and extensions in the following years. So the installation of a library, a water organ on the terrace and the extension of the restaurant.

Langenbrand transmission tower

The Langenbrand transmitter was built in 1964 and is 143 meters high. It is operated by Deutsche Telekom AG .

Wind turbine

In 1998 the wind turbine was built on the Langenbrander district. It is operated by Prowind and has an output of 0.75 MW. In the 2020s it is to be replaced by five more powerful systems, three of which, however, are located in the neighboring Enzkreis to the north.
