Sean Sullivan (born March 29, 1984 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is a German - American ice hockey player who has been under contract with ERC Ingolstadt from the German Ice Hockey League since 2017 .
Career
Growing up in Braintree , Sean Sullivan began his ice hockey career at St. Sebastian's School , a single-educational , catholic , secondary school in Needham , where the student at the time played with the future NHL professional Brian Boyle . He was assistant captain in the school team there . In his last year at St. Sebastian's School he was the best defender of the Independent School League (USHS) with 39 points . In addition, the left-shooter was elected twice to the league's all-star team .
From 2003 the then 19-year-old attended Boston University , where he played for the university team, the Terriers , for four years . In the same year, the American was selected in the NHL Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes in the ninth round in 272nd position. Sullivan has not yet played a game in the National Hockey League . The American celebrated his greatest success wearing the Boston University jersey by winning the Hockey East Championship in 2006. One season later, the senior led the team as captain on the ice. At the end of the season he was named the best defensive defender in Hockey East. After Sullivan was sporadic in the preseason for San Antonio Rampage , the then farm team of the Phoenix Coyotes, the defender signed his first professional contract with the organization from Glendale . Since the contract, which initially ran for two years, was only a two-way contract, it did not guarantee any assignments in the North American elite class. So Sullivan was used both at the Arizona Sundogs in the Central Hockey League , but especially at San Antonio Rampage in the American Hockey League . In the team from Texas , the defender, who actually acted more defensively, discovered his offensive qualities and was the best defender of his team with 32 points in the 2008/09 season. Thanks to his satisfactory performance, his contract in organizing the Phoenix Coyotes was extended for another year. In the first eight games of the new season, he scored ten points. Because of this, he was named AHL player of the week . He also took part in the training of the Coyotes for the first time as a replacement for the injured Zbyněk Michálek . At the end of the 2009/10 season , the defender was again with 49 points this time the best defensive player from San Antonio Rampage. Through these accomplishments, Sullivan was nominated for the AHL All-Star Game .
At the start of the new season, the American joined the organization of the San Jose Sharks , where he signed a one-year contract. Again Sullivan was used exclusively in the AHL, the farm team of the team from California , the Worcester Sharks . In the middle of the 2011/12 season , the Florida Panthers organization signed the defensive player in exchange for Tim Kennedy . The transfer meant a return to San Antonio Rampage, which had meanwhile changed their cooperation partner. With the Texans, Sullivan reached the play-offs , but was eliminated there in the conference semifinals. On July 10, 2012, the now free agent signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche organization . Here, too, he did not get beyond deployments in the AHL. With the Lake Erie Monsters he was only able to play half of the games of the 2012/13 season due to a broken jaw .
Since his contract was not renewed again, the American decided to move to Europe. On June 7, 2013, the Swedish club MODO Hockey announced the transfer of the European novice. Sullivan signed a one-year contract. However, this was dissolved again after ten games in view of disappointing performance on October 12, 2013. Just one day later, the Straubing Tigers from the German Ice Hockey League announced the commitment of the defender. At that time, bottom of the table, Sullivan signed until the end of the 2013/14 season . For the 2014/15 season he moved to the Iserlohn Roosters . Sullivan has had German citizenship since February 2015. In June 2015 he signed a three-year contract with Hamburg Freezers . In May 2016, however, his engagement in Hamburg ended after the Freezers did not apply for a license for the DEL season 2016/17 . After an unsuccessful trial training at the AHL club Hartford Wolf Pack , the defensive player returned to the DEL, where Sullivan again ran for the Straubing Tigers, initially with a trial contract (then contract extension until the end of the 2016/17 season).
In April 2017 he was signed by the ERC Ingolstadt .
Style of play
Sean Sullivan is considered a defender with offensive potential, but whose strengths are on the defensive, he is not afraid to act physically. He's also a good skater who has a solid shot. Jason Dunham , the sporting director of the Straubing Tigers said of him: “... He is a good and solid defender who can also set offensive accents. I am convinced that he will help us. "
