The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius in Niederhornbach , a district of the market town of Pfeffenhausen in the Lower Bavarian district of Landshut , is a baroque hall church built in 1693/94 and listed as a monument with the number D-2-74-172-45 in the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation is registered. The St. Lawrence of Rome (Remembrance Day: August 10) consecrated parish church of the parish of St. Martin in Pfeffenhausen of pastoral care.

history

The churches in Nieder- and Oberhornbach originally belonged to the parish of Pfeffenhausen, to which the Regensburg Cathedral Chapter , and from 1246 the Ebersberg Monastery, exercised the right of presentation . On May 30, 1253, Bishop Albert von Regensburg separated Niederhornbach together with the Oberhornbach branch from Pfeffenhausen and raised it to an independent parish . The first pastor known by name was Peter Mörtsch in 1437. The right of presentation to the parish was exercised by the lords of the Hofmark von Hornbach until 1633 , and after their extinction the Jesuit college in Munich .

When today's parish church was built in 1693/94, large parts of the previous medieval building were reused in the masonry . During the last interior renovation in the choir, an added pointed arch window and remains of wall paintings were discovered. The three-sided choir closure and the late medieval lamp niches in the nave walls also point to the adoption of an older floor plan . Today it is assumed that only an existing church that was damaged in the Thirty Years War was rebuilt.

In 1992/93, the sanctuary was redesigned in line with the Second Vatican Council . In the years 1995 to 1997 the exterior renovation was carried out for the last time . An extensive interior renovation took place in 2012.

architecture

The single-nave , saddle-roofed structure with the choir that has not been drawn in comprises five bays and a choir closure on three sides of the octagon. The exterior building, whitewashed in light green, is largely undivided except for white pilaster strips and arched window openings. The 32.30 meter high, three-storey tower is attached to the north side of the eastern nave yoke . This rises above a square floor plan and is crowned by a pointed helmet over four triangular gables. This was only added in 1875 in the course of historicism and the return to the medieval building tradition. The previous tower was one storey higher and had an octagonal tower and an onion dome covered with wooden shingles .

The interior is only structured by pilasters and the pressed choir arch . The choir is vaulted by a flat needle cap barrel, which rises from small pieces of cornice . In the nave there is a cross vault with belt arches that also end in pieces of cornice.

Furnishing

inside view

The baroque interior, which at first glance appears to be uniform, was created in different stages.

pulpit

Only the pulpit has survived from the first high baroque furnishings from 1694 . The polygonal body , structured by winding columns, is adorned with five wooden figures: in the middle of the Virgin Mary , flanked by the holy bishops Emmeram , Wolfgang , Ulrich and Rupert . There is a figure of the Apostle Paul on the sound cover .

Altars

The side altars, also from 1694, were removed during renovation work in 1968. The altar leaves remained in the church: on the left the death of St. Joseph, on the right St. Aloisius von Gonzaga.

The high altar was created in 1906 in the neo-baroque style. The structure is supported by four columns, the inner pair of which is twisted. The main picture shows the church patron Laurentius on the way to his martyrdom . The extract picture shows the Holy Family . Both pictures were painted by Georg Halter from Regensburg . The side figures of St. Anna (left) and St. Joachim (right) come from the previous altar and were created in 1767 by the Rottenburg sculptor Felix Pämmer. On the gilded tabernacle there is a late Gothic figure of Mary from around 1470/80.

The contemporary furnishings of the chancel - consisting of a people's altar , ambo , baptismal font , lecture cross, Easter candlestick and sideboard - were created in the 1990s by the sculptor Friedrich Koller from Laufen an der Salzach .

Other equipment

On the north wall of the choir, just below the oratory of the Hornbach court lords, as well as on the nave wall, there are two crucifixion groups , each created in the middle of the 18th century. In addition to the cross of Christ and the figurative representations of Mary and the “favorite disciple” John, the first includes two other crosses of the criminals executed with Jesus. A small late Gothic figure of the church patron Laurentius from around 1520/30 has been preserved in the nave. This may still come from the equipment of the previous building. The church stalls in the nave were made in 1757 by the Pfeffenhausen carpenter Lorenz Gründl and are very well preserved. The cheeks are richly decorated with acanthus and rocailles . The straight gallery parapet is decorated with 13 fields, which show the Jesus (in the middle) and the twelve apostles . Under the gallery there are two Rococo paintings in elaborately carved frames with cloth draperies . These were created by Johann Evangelist Hölzl from Ingolstadt and show a representation of the Sacred Heart and a Mater Dolorosa .
