reception

At Metacritic , the album has a Metascore of 77 and a user score of 9.1.

AD Amorosi of Variety writes that the album, which is dedicated to the sounds and soul of Africa, has an anthemic musicality, even if it does not have the same avant-garde character as Beyoncé's last album Homecoming, but this does it again through taste, heart and soul bet. For Amorosi, Beyoncé's entertaining song Otherside , which begins with a piano melody that gives way to sweet Swahili whispers towards the end, evokes the change from Eurocentrism to Afrocentrism.

Guardian's Alexis Petridis notes that the initial riffs in Bigger and Find Your Way Back felt like riffs on Circle of Life , describing the latter as a subtle pop track with an Afrobeat-inspired rhythm. Through their inclusion in the album, the Afrobeats would appear in a completely new light, Petridis continues. The album proves Beyoncé's excellent taste.

Sandra Gonzalez CNN writes: "With Spirit shows Beyoncé masterfully their strength and vocal acrobatic skills." Luisa Hemmerling of Noizz.de feels Spirit rather than the best song on the album. She notes that the songs are partly rhythmic odes to African culture without appearing like a traditional culture album: "It is a pop-cultural work with clear inspiration that runs through the lyrics, instrumentation and lyrics." The album exudes joie de vivre, pride and tradition, packaged as an exciting musical project, Hemmerling continues.
